Šilentabor

Yesterday I climbed to Šilentabor following the stamp of the Notranjska mountain trail. Towards the top it was very windy. In the old logbox there's only a disintegrating logbook, on the top page a wasp nest is forming. On the way back I also stopped at Primož. There were few people, but I also saw an Apollo and two swallowtails.

This was really nothing known to us. First heard a couple days ago, but we immediately got excited for the described path. Just had to see that wall right away, which was so nicely shown, and the path past it that thrilled us. Then we learned it's possible to do a loop tour and the excitement was complete.

So we started hiking from the village Podtabor and headed to its famous Podtabor wall. Then through Mussolini's tunnel and on along the old Italian road. Along the path past two springs, we looked left also to the old Roman road, stepped to the ridge in between, but returned so not to miss anything. Short stop at the really beautiful church of St. Martin and from there enjoyed the gorgeous view to Snežnik, on the other side to Triglav, Nanos, Vremščica. We continued the path to the top of Šilentabor, which is an excellent viewpoint. Only the view to the Dolomites was missing, rest all perfect. But not advisable to go to the edge, as it's steeply dropping into the valley.
We returned to the church, but via the lower path. Then we went onto the ridge of Brkini edge, persisting on it to the end. Of course with great views on both sides, across pastures (we admired the horses) and through wonderful pine woods. So, we did a circular tour and recommend it to everyone like that. Not many markers on the path, just a few samples. Descriptions of both paths arenasmeh.

We first learned about Šilentabor on this forum and Ločanka's enthusiastic description sparked our curiosity nasmeh. It didn't take long and one cold morning we found ourselves at the starting point.

We started at the village fountain next to Šembije village and soon descended traversely to the old Italian path. The maintained gravel road runs under the picturesque Podtaborska stena, which dominates the surroundings with its majesty. The pleasant road brought us all the way to the church of St. Martin and further to Šilentabor village. The namesake peak is just a little further and is an excellent viewpoint.

We continued the path towards another interesting peak... Primož. There are nicely marked cart tracks and some forest paths leading there. The peak is riddled with fortifications because the Rapallo border once ran here. The structures are really extensive, but due to metal barriers you can't enter them. Maybe it's better that way. Primož has a viewpoint a bit off the peak, and there are marked energy points on it.

We returned on the other side, equally well marked. We passed an interesting fence with electric shepherd below and high above. After thinking, we figured the upper wires are probably for bears when they stand on hind legs. They are supposedly common here, but luckily we only saw one friendly one in Šilentabor village. We even took a photo with it velik nasmeh. We continued on the left side of St. Martin church and climbed to the scenic Brkinski rob. A cold wind was blowing, but we weren't deterred. For a while we followed a good path, then pathlets and intuition. No particular difficulties and soon we were back at the start. Behind us was a pleasant adventure and something new. Recommended.

The last two posts encouraged me to walk it in a family circle on a shortened circular path starting at the military history museum, just outside Pivka.

Path very nicely marked, info boards spice up the path and you learn something interesting, new. Not to mention the "forgotten" trenches, bunkers. Top!
The afternoon Sunday sun and no wind created not just a spring feeling, but already real early summer velik nasmeh

On Tuesday 1.11.2022 on the path Šembije-Šilentabor (probably lower) I lost a tripod for camera from my backpack. If anyone spots it, please info, matej.fister@gmail.com
Otherwise really excellent path, scenic, at the beginning of the upper one there is some beautiful scree. For morning start I recommend Šembije -> upper path -> Šilentabor -> lower path -> Šembije, as the lower path is in shade in the morning.

Apparently Ločanka's and Bagi's posts also enthused our guide Marjan and on Wednesday he took us to Šilentabor. We like these train tours, this time to Nardin, of course first time. Easy, pleasant path, really a walk. This time more gloomy weather. But we know, once we repeat the tour because we were in good weather, second time repeat it if bad weather, to see how it is in the sun... Probably next time connect with Vremščica, of course again by train. Nature is beautiful, pines, old houses, some partially renovated, but this time in clouds, fog. Walk to the little church, partly along Krpan's path, to the highest peak 742 m Šilentabor, and to the fortifications. I found another apricot. At Herman in Pivka some had snacks, looked good. Our path was 10 km long. Thanks to the guide, we'll come again.

We spent the holiday with guide Marjan in the Pivka area. Also this time by train, snowflakes accompanied us, in Pivka sunny but very windy and cold weather awaited us. First we went to Primož, then continued the circular path around Šilentabor. The path was mostly dry, except shorter snowy sections, a bit icy, but possible to avoid problems. Today we were favored with blue sky, nice views to sv. Trojica, Pivka... Visit to the military museum, and lunch at Herman's, but not on Kredarica...

Although the previous post is only a few days old, I'll add mine too. Today circular from Šembije village to the peak, return along the old Italian road. Beautiful places, unknown until now.

The path along Brkinski rob is very scenic. Today on the top for a while quite cold wind, then warm sun. Still some snow on the path. Interesting is the tunnel carved into the rock and Podtaborska stena, where we stopped a bit, observed and admired. Really majestic.

The peak considering low altitude and location surprisingly good viewpoint - from Triglav to Snežnik, Nanos, Vremščica and more.
Starting section from the water reservoir above the village a bit by feel, because quite obstructed by pasture fences. Animals out in the open. Further on the path is nicely followable.

It was a nice day. nasmeh
