Škabrijel

Škabrijel is a 646 m high hill that, with Sabotin and Sv. Gora, forms a triplet that frames Solkan and Nova Gorica. Always a well-visited hill, until the construction of the observation tower it didn't offer much pleasure to those inspired by views in the hills. The southern path from Kekec is by far the most crowded. I prefer less crowded paths. I like the circular path from Prevala. The path from Vratc is also nice and interesting, which with some improvisation can be walked circularly, either descending to the south side or north towards Ravnica. From the Prevala-Ravnica road there are also two interesting paths.

After more than a year, on 2.10.2014 I headed to Škabrijel from Prevala. Up the shorter unmarked trail that starts with a quite steep ascent through the forest, later the path almost levels and gently crosses the overgrown western ridge of Škabrijel. I returned partially on the southern path, then turned back towards Prevala. On Škabrijel I was surprised by some novelties: little path to the monument deep in the forest, cleaned shooting trenches along the path and renovated monument to Hungarian soldiers on the southern path.

Suzana, you very often walk my paths, which I currently can't manage. Thanks for the notes from them.

Nice peak, I was there a year and a half ago last time up, nice pics. Shame this peak was among the most besieged on the Soča front and Italians supposedly fired 22,000 shells of all calibers on it; nice excursion spot.

On Sunday, on the return from Sveta Gora and then also from Prevala, I climbed Veliki hrib and Škabrijel.
Paths around both peaks are nicely passable and well marked, also equipped with some info boards.
Lp, Tadej

Yesterday I was with PD Škofja Loka with the Thursday retirees group on Škabrijel. We started right from Solkan center and went on the Path of Peace. The path led us past water and a bench. We stopped at the Hungarian monument dedicated to fallen Hungarian soldiers of WWI. We saw a signpost to another monument but didn't go there as rain threatened all along. At the top it really started. From the viewpoint tower you see really far. Down we went to Prevala past many buried caverns, gun positions and shooting trenches. In the Solkan community their president greeted us. We viewed the war museum, carpentry museum, grave of our writer France Bevk and had lunch in a pleasant inn in the settlement center at Jožeta Srebrniča square.

Well, let's go.2

Hello, does anyone know - is the Kekec - Škabrijel - Sv. Gora path dry or if not how much snow? Best thanks, LP.

Whoever goes on this path should first read the book by Vasja Klavora ŠKABRIJEL; I did it recently, and I'll go quietly and respectfully at the first opportunity on it. As for snow kavka 2244, I think no panic since it's Primorska nice path.

@kavka2244

Today acquaintances from Solkan were up there; specifically they walked from Prevala. Snow at top ca. 5cm, path slippery. But it was visibly melting as everything was flowing ....

I visited Škabrijel already last week though, but no matter, conditions haven't changed yet.
Started from Vratce. The path was extremely interesting, through tunnels. At the start a bit more tense, then pleasant walk in the forest. From the scenic platform fantastic views. Returned the same way because I don't know the terrain.

28.01.2022. Many years I haven't been up here. Yesterday we decided to check out three caverns below Kekec and Škabrijel and along the way go to that peak too. Viewing caverns took us quite some time. That first one a bit below Kekec was quite long. And entrance on all fours. Still it came to 15 km walking. When first time on these paths it's really interesting.

Darinka,
did you stop at Kekec inn for pancakes? When in Solkan, we often drive up and treat ourselves. Best when sitting outside with great views on Gorizia and Friulian plain...

I'm curious where exactly this cavern on Kekec is, the one you have to crawl to on all fours.

Thanks in advance.

Two weeks ago Saturday I also did a loop trail following WW1 traces from Preval to Škabrijel and past IR87 back. On the trail marked decently by Walk of Peace, going up soon turn left from Preval and head steeply up. From the direct path branches a loop (heart-shaped on map) around the hill called Mali vrh or Veliki hrib sometimes, army just marked kot 526. velik nasmeh But this loop was very poorly trodden, had to watch not to stray. Along it some monument, next board on AO positions there, but learn nothing who when for whom built this "pile". OSM used by Walk of Peace says "Hungarian pyramid". Well, shape more like cross, and Hungarians take care of their soldier sites elsewhere in Goriška, nothing here (unlike real Hungarian pyramid on popular path from Kromberk). If anyone knows more about monument, thanks in advance.

Right on Škabrijel says Americans built objects along Morgan Line (temp border 1945-1947), but mentioned path to Kromberk doesn't pass...

Yesterday retirees DU Medvode first to see church on Sveta gora. It was unlocked - never been inside before. Then drove to start for Škabrijel. Path dry - pleasant. At top Škabrijel almost all climbed tower. Down other path - past that bivouac to Kekec inn - sadly closed. Along path flowering Istrian cyclamen, violets and more.
