Škarje from Logarska Valley

Dušan says: Let's go to the snow. He doesn't need to tell me twice, so on Friday at seven we meet at the completely empty parking lot in front of the Mountaineers' Lodge in Logarska Valley. No more snow on the road or chains that recently blocked further travel, the traffic sign is lying behind the little bridge After ten minutes walking we're already below the slope leading to Klemenča Cave, a car surprises us there - after less than an hour we realize it's the supply vehicle. In front of the hut I take some pics, treat myself to tasty tea in an XXL mug, strap on gaiters and crampons and we're clawing up the hill. Snow was hard at first, softer with altitude. New snow up to 40cm was sinking to the firm base, so continuing was one big fight, especially above the Rjavček Peak saddle. Dušan and I don't give up, of course, we've plowed several times this year. Just before the Škarij ridge there's an annoying steep icy step where you couldn't go without an ice axe. Since the south side of the ridge was fogged in, I lost the will to push to Ojstrica. Didn't stop Dušan from going on, so I decided to wait in the lee of Škarje. After a good hour it starts clearing, so I climb nearby Roglje which I visited last August, great view from there especially to Ojstrica. We descend the approach route, hang out longer in front of the hut where we're the only company for the keeper. Down to the car with a nice bunch of still closed edelweiss.

Tone, nicely documented, as always I remembered my autumn ascent to Lučka Baba, when just enough snow fell to make the path difficult and I let out some curse Where is the bivouac from picture 6 located? I don't remember seeing it anywhere along the path.

Tone; nice photos showing that winter on these beautiful Savinja peaks will still be long. Just a small remark to the description; you probably meant Lučka baba and not "brana"!?

Thanks to both. You're right, Polona. Baba in the snow is no lenient young lady, so I didn't even think of climbing it while waiting for Dušan from Ojstrica when the mists started to clear. If the snow had been frozen, it would have been a small joke. You didn't notice the bivouac because it's not on the summer path where you walked, but on a remote hillock. We preferred to follow a few days old ski tracks, as walking on them was a bit easier, but unfortunately they only led to the bivouac. You can spot it on picture 38. @dleskovec, there is really still a lot of snow. Yes, with the mentioned Baba there are some issues. From the double name, and also the heights on different maps. But it's over a hundred meters lower than Ojstrica and less than a hundred meters from Planjave Vile.

Yesterday ascent to Škarije. Start at Dom planincev, up to Klemenče cave and then on through forest, scrub and moraine all the way to Škarije. Actually the goal was Lučka Brana, but I gave up because I was even more barely exhausted on Škarije and this peak is somehow too airy for me, the vertiginous one. Back the same path. Along the path a bit below the saddle below Rjavički vrh there is another snow patch. Careful here!

But it's locked and not open for hikers. So no one counts on sleeping there...

This is more important info for some Belgian and Czech sites...
