Škofja Loka - hiking trail to Divja Loka Castle

For Škofja Loka one could say it's a city of castles and mansions. In the town itself the Škofja Loka Castle naturally takes first place, a bit higher there are ruins of the tower on Kranclj. In the town itself we find Puštalski castle; Starološki castle - does anyone even know it; Ajdmanov castle, now owned by Ursuline nuns; in nearby Visoko we find Tavčar mansion.

High above Škofja Loka below Lubnik in the Middle Ages the castle Divja Loka watched over the medieval town of Škofja Loka. Unfortunately an earthquake destroyed it in 1511 as well as the tower on Kranclj and it was never rebuilt. It was built in the early 12th century. It was a mighty guardian over the Škofja Loka valley - back then no forest overgrew it like today. To it we have just under an hour from the road. Suddenly we find ourselves at the castle ruins which suggest it was once a strongly fortified castle with mighty high walls. Actually very little is known about it.
