I'm interested in sleeping outdoors in our high mountains. - One night (say a 24h tour) specifically above 2500+ m.a.s.l. mainly in winter time (-18°C and below). Only sleeping bag and bivy bag count,... Slowly leaning towards Ultralight stuff. How would that work? Maybe someone has experiences with such a thing? Thanks LP

Would sleep alone or in two? Nice to have a warm friend for that.

Heh Totally agree. But, unfortunately I'll be alone. Mine isn't for such feats...

At home by the stove will be most comfortable.

It works great if you have proper sleeping bag, mat and know how to find a good spot. Of course avalanche shovel is not extra to make a "shelter", that is to deepen the "bed". We've slept outdoors on snow several times with buddy, no tent, just bag and bivy and we were fine. It was cold, how many minus his thermometer showed I unfortunately don't remember. Nowadays you'll have most trouble waiting for nights when temp drops that low . . .

Ultralight stuff and ultra cold don't mix.

@MountaineerX If the night isn't as you want, you can always pack up, turn on headlamp and head to the valley

Some of you sleep outdoors. I'm interested what it means in practice if you have e.g. bag with comfort zone 0°C and Thermarest underneath. Does it mean comfortable sleep at that temp in bag dressed in underwear or do you need to wear down jacket too. And do you look for grassy ground with more moisture around bag or rocky/scree ground and count pebbles under you?

@SamoK, obviously you have lots of experience. I don't. That's why I'm asking.

Yes, I have them. I got them by sleeping outside many times. Not by mail.

@SamoK, what's with the rudeness and smart-assing on a perfectly sensible question? @lojz: comfort zone is meant as the temperature at which a woman can comfortably sleep dressed in long underwear, socks and with a pad under the sleeping bag. While lower limit is the value for men. Clear - things vary and generalizations shouldn't be made. More on the link: https://sectionhiker.com/cold-weather-sleeping-bag-temperature-ratings/
