Smrekovec Hut

I'm interested in your experiences with the caretaker (staff) at Smrekovec Hut.
About half an hour ago I called there to arrange an overnight stay for Monday, but he dismissed me in the first sentence with the words: "This is an open-type hut! Goodbye! Adieu!" and hung up.
I don't know if I'd go there to sleep with my family now. Probably better to choose Mozirska Hut, where the lady was very friendly and explained what I was interested in...

Fika - that's what they call the hut keeper at Smrekovec hut. He's known to joke sometimes with visitors. Otherwise I've never heard anything bad about him - I don't visit the hut regularly so no personal experiences (from stories of colleagues who are there more).
Food, they praise it and it's varied, has sour milk too. But these days lots of visitors up there - day trippers and he's probably a bit nervous (see Goba's article - general talk), have a nice time with family in the mountains!!

Adding my experience from last November when there was already snow in the area. True, people are different, but in the mountains I want a hutkeeper who gives some advice, chats with guests..., but the gentleman in this hut is really peculiar, doesn't offer a word easily. And so last year my husband and I left the hut quite quickly.

They say he's a character and if you're used to him it's fine - otherwise you might be surprised. Those I've talked to are used to him and take him as he is! That's all I know about him!!

Fika really has his quirks, but otherwise good hutkeeper. Maybe he's been in the job too long, so some things are self-evident to him. Probably wanted to say the hut is big and plenty of space, everyone welcome. Hut is nice with excellent position, would be shame to replace it with Mozirska... Of course there's stuff to see on Golte too.

Thanks for replies!
We decided to overnight at Mozirska hut and it was right. With gondola to Golte, left sleeping gear there and went to Smrekovec, on return also to Boskovec. If the hutkeeper at Smrekovec hut had bothered, he could have told us that on Mondays hut closed till 18h... Good we didn't count on him much! But our kids were delighted by the goats there that lazily let themselves be petted. Anyway the whole trip (hike) was very nice. Leisurely walk in nice nature. Regards see you another time!

Did you know that in Smrekovec hut you can't even feed your own baby if you have his food with you (e.g. frutek...).
Just so you know, we'll avoid this hut in future, run by Mr. Fika.
Smrekovec is otherwise close to my heart, but this has now deterred me from visiting again.jezen

this is really totally lame.
even lamer is that I bought food in the hut yesterday, but after one hour I was hungry again, since portions are measured very stingily.

I was at Smrekovec on 24.7.. Mr. Fika was very friendly and obliging to our family. He imprinted himself in my memory as a witty and sympathetic gentleman. But everyone has his "own" day.

Me too with my experience - we also called on phone and he rudely replied what are we calling for, since we're talking to him, right. Well, true. You mustn't take him too seriously, then it's ok. But I must say that nowhere in any hut was the tea soooo good as here. Need to praise him a bit, then he's sweet as honey. In the end he showed us everything around the hut and you see he's exceptional hutkeeper. Regards

I think it's right to preserve as long as possible the essence of mountain huts still being shelters for hikers and walkers. And not providing three-star hotel-gastro services at bargain prices... Smrekovec is a besieged spot with lots of cars and also spoiled (not to say shitting) valley visitors who expect to be served front and back like in the valley and that Fika will nicely tuck them in. Fika is a good caretaker of a MOUNTAIN hut who takes good care of visitors. And that's why I have to react to some of the above accusations. Everyone has their character, Fika just a tougher one, since life hasn't spared him either. But if you're somewhat human yourself and accept it and don't immediately whine offended or lecture, he will gladly serve you, offer you a "snof" and some "masterly saying".

With previous caretakers at Mozirska, you could really get "shit on", starting with the pigsty around the hut and really shitty behavior. The new Mozirska caretaker has also started really well, and by the way, the strudel up there is now supposedly fantastic.

And one more thing, if Najanaja is so www-literate that you find the caretaker's mobile number and immediately whine offended on forums, you could see on the PZS page that the hut is closed on Mon until 18h! And your critic has a nickname that says it all... there in the hut you can eat your sandwich or fruit from your backpack without worry (I can say that). Not to mention that last year at least the Celje guys at Okrešelj charged corkage in this case!

There's already a shortage of caretakers and we mustn't let valley spoiling drive away even the good ones.

I also think master Fika is the right caretaker.
The hut is very nicely arranged, around it a real open-air museum, kids were thrilled with the goat and kid that checks every hiker's snack... I found the whole thing very cute.

Of course, the gentleman caretaker also has the right to some of his quirks.

If he were the sole owner of the hut, I'd understand those quirks, but now... really he's friendly only to locals. Verified!
Good luck.

Every day is to be used when this year's autumn so generously still gives us beautiful sunny days now; Sunday 22.11.- Smrekovec- this time not via Golte pasture, but by car from Beli Vodi past Sveti Križ; a little more by car, then along the macadam road to the hut, last 15 min on path. Walking about 1 hour 40 min. Of course obligatory jump to the top, where there was still a bit of snow in the shade, and obligatory some pics, this time with camera;

Yesterday, 23.2.1014, we set off from Andrej's hut on Slemen towards Smrekovec Hut velik nasmeh
We did the tour: Andrejev dom na Slemenu - Kramarica (by road) - Smrekovec Hut - and back the same way.

The tour took us 8 hours. There's quite a lot of snow, sinking in places. No track was made, so we had to make it ourselves. At the same time, quite a few fallen trees, which makes the path even harder and consequently prolongs walking time. So instead of 2.5 hours, we walked 4 hours to Smrekovec Hut.
But we made it easier for other hikers, now you can go on this tour without problem, as the track is made, and the path is also more visible, as we cleared the markers that were under snow mežikanje
From Kramarica to Smrekovec Hut we went by road, as the track was already there. No track over Bukov stan yesterday.

Pictures from the hike can be seen on the website of Planinsko društvo Matica Murska Sobota: http://www.mojalbum.com/pdmaticams/20140223-dom-na-smrekovcu/izhodisce-pri-andrejevemu-domu-na-slemenu/21504835

Some pictures from today from the Ljubenske Rastke direction. I went up along the Krumpah stream, descended past the Atelšek farm.

Is it possible to connect Smrekovec Hut and Travnik Hut into a nice circular tour without mostly walking on road? I don't know these areas at alljezik

Instead of circular, I suggest a nice mostly ridge path - from Golte hut to Travnik, requires two cars.
Drive to Golte by car, cross to Smrekovec Hut, then climb along the path to Smrekovec, Krnes, Komen and Travnik. From Travnik Hut descend to the second car (Ljubno, Ljubenske Rastke, Primož or another higher "starting point"). Nice, green, full-day easy tour. Walking about eight hours.
Starting from Ljubno (lowest starting point) - so in reverse - count an extra hour of walking.
