Šober / Monte Sciober Grande

We started a quite unpromising morning in Remšendol, where a local surprised us with a friendly offer and took us to the screes after the rain by car. He dropped us at the sign for path 518. Since it was raining, he figured we wouldn't quit, so he quit. Up steep slopes to the hut under Rabeljske špice, where three paths join (ours, another 518 from Mali Rovt, and 520), fog still swirled, but there it started opening up. The sun shone on one of the world's nicest spots and showed those Rabeljske špice we usually see from the Predel road. We continued on path 520, detoured to Veliki Šober (delays you a minute and a half of climb) and paused below it. Enough to explain the views. I.e., what is seen when seen, because today not. Fog always covered the Rabelj side and nice views to peaks above Mrzle vode. Mangart and Jalovec hid too. From Vraška škrbina, where path from Rablje joins on the right, we went left to Stože saddle and a little before descended left to the valley. First through high wet grasses, crossed a bit annoying fallen gully, then mostly on otherwise steep but nice path to screes under Bucher. Except fallen chimney needing caution, no special features. By that time, it cleared above us, revealing Remšendol beauties. Especially Monte Bucher stands out, nice spire you can't tear your gaze from. Wonderful lonely end, nice vistas (if any) and nice little-known hard-to-access mountains. Heard of Bucher, Šenek, Breitkofel? All there. And mysterious approach to Kopo, nothing I find written about. No more ads lest it becomes crowded at once.

I went to this nice vantage point yesterday, a bit around. From Remšendol into the head of the valley, then on to Moriska planina, where I left the marked path and turned right, climbed up the sloping ledge (II degree) to Sedelce pod Skalo, descended to the ruins of the old hut, via Mesnovka towards Mangartska planina and via Dren-Dolič to Mala Ruša and via saddle Čez Stože to Vraška Škrbina. From there along the ridge to Šober, where I met a large group (28) from one of the PDs from Ljubljana, descended to the hut under Rabeljski spici, where another large group from LJ was descending too, and to the starting point. On the path from the hut to the valley there's quite a bit of fallen wood, but detours are already beaten.

Today to Šober. At the Rifugio Cinque Punte hut the sun greeted us and we had it the whole tour. The Šober ridge itself is extremely scenic. All around the wild world of mighty peaks greets you. We descended to Mangartska planina from Stože saddle.

On Tuesday, 2.7.2019, we wanted something easier and Shober was just right. Again alone on the whole path, only two turned back at the Stože saddle on the way back. Probably due to worsening weather. To the Stože saddle the path is mostly quite steep, when it enters the dwarf pine belt the steepness eases, but in the dwarf pines it's even hotter. From the saddle we soon reach the sedelce, from where in about 20 min we reach the summit. From the ridge nice view towards the western Julian Alps and Rajbl.

Oh boy, Alessio, how can you Really wonderful Who knows if we'll get there this year and further across Friuli, or if we'll have to meet Santa and Grandpa Frost first and maybe they will fulfill these wishes. Dreams. Longings.

The top of Sinji dol is less than ten minutes' walk from the path below Vršič and Grintovec.

True, but the challenge would be across the landslide and up through the forest, then a jump down to the marked path. Thank God something remains for us to explore, that “not everything is on Google” 😉
