Solčava Mountain Trail (S24)

I'd like to introduce a new 24-hour running-hiking challenge that originates from the Styrian end (Solčava belongs to the Styrian region wink) and runs through both the Karavanke Mountains and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, which can proudly match other 24 challenges in Slovenia.

This is the Solčava Mountain Trail/Solčava Transversal/Through the mountains around Solčava or shortly S24, which is originally a checkpoint loop and was created in 1975 on the initiative of Solčava mountaineers.

During my research I found very little information, literature and records on the Solčava Mountain Trail topic. Only one article from Planinski vestnik and a small logbook with trail description, checkpoints and space for collecting mountaineering stamps. S24 includes 15 mandatory and three optional checkpoints, control stamps are standard.

Mandatory peaks:
1. Velika Raduha
2. Olševa
3. Mrzla gora
4. Štajerska Rinka
5. Turska gora
6. Brana
7. Planjava
8. Ojstrica
9. Krofička
10. Strelovec

Mandatory mountain huts:
1. Robanov kot (no mountaineering stamp exists)
2. Koča na Grohatu
3. Koča v Podolševi (no longer exists -> now tourist farm Strevc)
4. Frischaufov dom na Okrešlju
5. Koča na Klemenči jami

Optional mountain huts:
1. Koča na Loki pod Raduho
2. Kocbekov dom na Korošici
3. Kamniška koča na Kamniškem sedlu

Briefly, I'd like to describe the planned S24 route -> Robanov kot (tourist farm Govc-Vršnik), planina Arta (can cut via hunting trail but it's currently hard to pass due to fallen tree), Velika Raduha, descent over Durce, Koča na Grohatu, Spodnje Sleme, Olševa, tourist farm Strevc, at excursion farm Klemenšek descent to Matkov kot (rare unmarked section), Matkov kot, Mrzla gora, Koroška Rinka (optional checkpoint but you can't reach without it) -> Štajerska Rinka, Turska gora, descent via Turski žleb, Frischaufov dom na Okrešlju, Brana, Kamniška koča na Kamniškem sedlu, Planjava, Ojstrica, Koča na Klemenči jami, Krofička, Strelovec, descent past Kneza (shortcuts) to Robanov kot (tourist farm Govc-Vršnik).

Those who know the described peaks well know that most of the route follows very demanding mountain paths dominated by fixed cables and pegs with little room for running steps.

As it should be, two Styrians (Denis Ulbl was with me in the Styrian duo smile) successfully, as the first ones, connected all mandatory checkpoints into one sensible loop on Friday. We did the trail self-supported and under 24 h (22 h 50 min).

In my opinion I rank the difficulty of 24 challenges in Slovenia like this (done all except J24):
1. J24 - Jezerska planinska pot
2. S24 - Solčavska planinska pot
3. T24 - Tržiška planinska pot
4. Grintovci ekstrem
5. K24 etc.

S24 is 76 km long with 7400 m positive elevation gain smile.

With this, the baptism of S24 among us is officially open! wink

Best, Nino

Oh Nino! When you wrote to me, I remembered this thread. smile
First, congrats on the feat.
I'm curious why the starting point of this challenge isn't in Solčava? It could start and finish in Solčava if it's the Solčava Mountain Trail. I know Robanov kot belongs to Solčava, but still it could be done from Solčava to Solčava.wink

Hi,
@zokipoki, good point. I considered this variant too but given the mandatory control points and my obsession with perfect circles in the mountains I decided to start and end in Robanov kot. Personally the most beautiful valley velik nasmeh

Also, Solčavci named the Solčava mountain trail also "Through the mountains around Solčava" jezik

How would you do it?

Hey!
If it's an already charted route with mandatory points, doesn't make sense to change the starting point. Didn't know this route even exists. nasmeh
Where did you get the information? Did you inquire at Solčava TIC?
Actually really no other way than bypassing Solčava, all other variants would add more road walking, which somehow isn't sensible. Already from Strevc to Klemenšek is enough road. nasmeh
Very demanding loop that I'll probably never attempt, as such challenges are too much for me, except in some extreme situation. mežikanje
By old grandma I'm Solčevan and seems I have to correct you, no hard feelings, not Solčavci but Solčevani. Now even I don't know if I'm right. velik nasmeh

Wish you many more hiked paths! Good luck and best regards!

It's not a charted route. Only mandatory control points are set. Depends on the individual how to connect them. Solčava mountain trail has checkpoint circuit status:

All information I got from the logbook of Solčava mountain trail. No other literature.

Exactly so. Already from Strevc to Klemenšek enough road velik nasmeh

Very good Nino! You really made an effort. mežikanje
This with Solčavci is very funny despite the dictionary. velik nasmeh
Well, I still say by old grandma I'm Solčevan and not Solčavec. mežikanjejezik
