Špilnik (1018m)

We set off on Friday from the hamlet of Lohača, a few kilometres west of Planina, to the easily accessible peak on the southern edge of Hrušica.

We could have driven up the nice gravel road by car too, but we wanted to make a circular route, which due to the stronger wind we ultimately didn't complete. We quickly reached the saddle between Petričev hrib and Lipovec, heading towards the latter. The path steeply ascends along the pasture fence to its eastern slope and bypasses the summit to the south. It descends to the foot of Špilnik and continues to its forepeak, which to us looked more impassable than passable due to the scattered remnants of the glaze storm from years ago. So we tackled the peak from the east, towards the saddle between the forepeak and the main summit of Špilnik, where we found a nicely trodden (and cleared) marked path. I didn't even know it was marked, as I took the Nanos map, which seemed a more logical choice than the Snežnik map, on which the mentioned »area« is also located - the path we were on is marked as marked on it nasmeh
At the top of Špilnik a splendid view awaited us across the full width of the Julian Alps, the Karavanke weren't missing either, and behind Volčji vrh the Kamnik-Savinja peaks stood out. Due to the aforementioned nasty wind, after a short walk along the ridge we descended through steep grass to the foot of Špilnik's forepeak and returned the same way back.

The glaze storm consequences on Špilnik look - although localised - somewhat apocalyptic (bora probably added later), but at the same time, perhaps precisely because of that, there's a wild beauty to be felt there…

Nice tour nasmeh
Otherwise these peaks between Planinska gora and Sv. Lovrenc are in my opinion poorly visited and somewhat neglected; but I really enjoyed it up here. Path excellently routed between all "stumps" (not even trees anymore velik nasmeh). That short ridge part between "stumps" reminded me of some nice ridge closer to Julijci...
Definitely worth visiting these places.

Today I went to Špilnik and fully agree with predecessor. Beautiful panoramic peak, but doesn't get much visits unlike neighbors. So decided to photo it a bit and post route(s) on our super forum.

p.s. currently wild garlic growing below summit
p.p.s. unusual how glaze damage much more visible on Špilnik than on nearby Lipovec and Sv.Lovrenc

From Strmca on abandoned tracks and paths to road to saddle between Petričev vrh and Lipovec. Cross road and continue on track, last part bit off-trail to ridge leading to panoramic peak. Back west to mentioned saddle. Lipovec always visible, so up along fence. Then to Špilnik forepeak and on to super panoramic Špilnik. From summit left over pastures down to forest. On tracks/paths exactly to Sv. Marjete church. Not far to start. Snow mostly gone, path trodden, views incredible. Burja had its day too.

Petričev hrib - Lipovec - Špilnik

Very pleasant hills for strolling, at each we extended the loop a bit. From Petričev hrib down east side, then up next hillock (no name found), caught view of Planinsko polje, admired now for water abundance. Same direction but closer, spotted chamois herd grazing carefree on yellowish grass. All just extra detour unplanned.

At Lipovec not just flag and box, but up to true summit bit away, rocky but interesting. Path overgrown. Then bit own way up ridge to Špilnik forepeak and main. Fire remnants still there, but doesn't disturb, opposite, more authentic/wild/remote. Down pastures to lower path to rock with plaque.
With time left, drove to Grmada, viewed Planinsko polje from viewpoint, didn't skip summit.

Always surprised by discoveries of these lovely local hills, sometimes small mention pulls to explore/admire. Still sv.Lovrenc to do, not bad as debt remains must be paidnasmeh.

ŠPILNIK, SV. LOVRENC

It seemed to us that it could be nice in these parts after the fresh snow, plus we had a debt to settle. We were pleasantly surprised by the winter idyll right at the saddle between Petričev hrib and Lipovec. Friendly lady who had just come up from Strmca village told us her favorite Planinska gora route variant and we noted itnasmeh.

The path was full of admiration, not just winter impressions but also great views from Špilnik; Julijci, Karavanke, KSA, even Karnijci in the distance. They were really there, I zoomed in and no doubtnasmeh. The path was also full of other surprises, depending on how you take it, good or bad. On the cycle paths we were walking towards sv. Lovrenc we suddenly saw fresh bear tracks right in front of us on the ground, so we walked one behind the other for a while. Maybe we got too close to him and he turned elsewhere. Well, we didn't follow himnasmeh.

From the top of sv. Lovrenc we headed back to Studeno village, then through Strmca to the parking lot. Circular paths are the best!!

That's us in picture 33, we met right at the bear tracks. The tracks were relatively fresh, maybe he retreated when he heard or smelled us. But we did the loop in the opposite direction from you, with an extension to the Marija Snežna church and to Petričev hrib. Good luck!

yes, yes Matej, we met a bit before the tracks (in our direction). I thought maybe one of you would read these lines and add somethingnasmeh. We also followed roe deer tracks the whole way, but didn't think of fox at those prints. Yeah, quite interesting all together, meeting right at the critical pointnasmeh! Good luck to you too further on!

We checked our photos again and noticed on one that the tracks suddenly disappear. Probably turned off the road there. But I wasn't paying attention before to see where.

Interesting descriptions of Špilnik drew me to these unknown areas.
Circular tour Strmca, Petričev hrib, Lipovec, Špilnik, Sv. Lovrenc, Studeno, Strmca. A good 13 km accumulated, almost 1,000m ascent and lots of bora-spiced views. Nicely spent day.

Sv. Lovrenc - Špilnik - Lipovec - Petričev hrib - Grmada

First time here, but posts on this forum helped nasmeh. We parked roughly in the middle of the planned route, that's in Strmec village. Continuation through Studeno and visiting the local hill Sv. Lovrenc. Here we met the only hikers on the whole route.

Next goal was Špilnik, with a marked but quite overgrown path leading there. Followed by panoramic Lipovec and descent from there to the saddle with several signposts. We didn't follow any markings, but left the marked path and visited Petričev vrh too. That's also a nice viewpoint, walking was pure pleasure nasmeh. Descent from it on the opposite side required more care, as tall grass hid the descending path.

No major issues and soon we were at the church of Sv. Marija pod Grmado. Ascent to the top is well marked, passes a scenic take-off point. At the highest point limited view, bench for rest and pleasant shade. Followed descent to the valley and return along the road to start. Almost no cars, but incredibly many cyclists. More in the photo story ...

Start coordinates (Strmca): 45°49'52.3"N 14°11'52.2"E
We park in front of the Locals' House in Strmca1
Along the empty road we set off in the clockwise direction2
Soon the first houses of Studeno village appear3
Here also passes the central branch of Jakob's Path4
We search for the branch to St. Lovrenc and soon tackle the hill5
Some locals quickly whiz past us. Probably daily routine ...6
The higher we get, the better the views7
St. Lovrenc Church below the namesake summit8
Right beside it are the path signs too9
Some rocky path follows ...10
on the panoramic summit11
Here is also placed a sign with some main directions12
The Notranjska planinska pot goes over the summit, we will return to the church13
We continue towards Špilnik. Initially it descends steeply on the gravel road.14
Soon we come upon the junction to Planinska gora. We leave the road and turn uphill.15
The path is occasionally quite steep, the trail overgrown due to the season.16
On the slopes there is plenty of wild garlic, which has already lost most of its characteristic scent.17
In many places the consequences of the glaze ice from a few years ago are still strongly visible18
We walk on a well-marked path. Unknown green markers in the shape of two peaks also appear19
We are on the ridge, so the views are appropriate20
We pass Špilnik and go ahead in the direction of Lipovec21
First a descent follows on the overgrown path, then ascent again22
The path to Lipovec is considerably less bushy than to Špilnik. Obviously they graze here23
View downwards to Strmca, our starting point24
View back on the traversed path25
We will continue towards Grmada, but first is the visit to Petričev vrh26
The path to it is unmarked, but simple and scenic27
The summit is also a viewpoint, a few trees do not disturb28
We descend on the opposite side. Because the grass is already high, the path is less visible29
At some point it joins the bypass variant of Jakob's path and the mountaineering path30
Church of St. Mary below Grmada31
The overgrown summit allows only little view, but has a bench and pleasant shade32
view of the alpine pasture33
We descend on the opposite side of Grmada34
Very interesting inscription, rarely seen :)35
In the concluding part right before the valley a very steep descent follows36
Soon we are on the main road towards Studenem. Many cyclists ride past us37
This one is somewhat upset above us, but we do not take it seriously :)38
A little further we branch off from the main road towards Strmca39
We are already right before the starting point and end of the loop.40
GPS track. 18 km and 1100 m of elevation gain accumulated.41
