St. Nicholas above the Sava

"Fly category" hill walkers in this time prefer to settle for lower-lying hillocks, so after a long time, I headed again to St. Nicholas above the Sava, especially since the ascent is all along on the sunny side, without fear of snow and ice. Start a bit higher, by the road above Senožeti; the path is very nice, forest, soft with dry rustling leaves underfoot; among the slightly sprouting undergrowth, the first harbingers of awakening spring are already peeking, at the top by the little church, besides energy, you also get a wonderful view opening towards the north. From behind the forested slope of Cicelj, the eastern end of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps with chunky Planjava and pointed Ojstrica peeks in the distance, a bit more to the right Raduha is visible, further east but much closer Limbarska gora (in slight haze), behind it the long ridge of Menina stretches in the distance. Short, completely non-strenuous trip for old and young, spiced with a bunch of warm spring sun rays and beautiful nature and views.

Today in warm morning to Cicelj and St. Miklavž. Start Senožeti. Path is very nice. St. Miklavž summit offers wonderful views. Cicelj is not panoramic peak. Recommend, nice and not demanding tour, suitable for everyone. Best regards

St. Miklavž today no views. Path well trodden from Senožeti direction where I started. At summit sun showed for a moment, otherwise dense fog, but still nice short tour. Best regards.

I ruined the hiking path to Miklavž and Slivno with cycling, which totalled a good 63 km.
The view wasn't ideal, but nevertheless the Kamnik-Savinja Alps showed in a nice form. The only thing I miss at Miklavž is that I can't see the interior of the church. More at: https://www.gore-ljudje.net/novosti/147000/

St. Nicholas (741m) – above Sava: hiking trails and climbing on natural rock

From history: St. Nicholas is the patron saint of boatmen and raftsmen. One of Nicholas's churches, perhaps even the most important among them, stands on a hill above Senožeti above the Sava River. According to oral tradition, it was built in the second half of the 15th century by raftsmen who transported goods along the river. Due to its exceptional vantage point, this church was once called the guardian of the upper Sava. The raftsmen believed nothing could happen to them as long as they could see the church. The Turks allegedly burned the church later, but the locals rebuilt it right on the top of the hill, where there was supposedly originally a pagan temple.

From the present: numerous hiking trails lead to St. Nicholas both from the Sava valley and from the Moravska valley. That Miklavž has or had any climbing area was not known until now. In the nearby area near Zagorica – below Cicelj there is e.g. a small arranged crag with quite a few more or less difficult routes (the late Tomaž Humar once trained here), a bit further in Zasavje, near Renke, there is a short via ferrata under Špital and a three-level crag with many difficult routes, mostly traced and equipped by Vili Guček.

This spring, some rock sections below Miklavž were cleaned, in the upper part there are now some options also for free climbing on natural rock, but the difficulty exceeds 3, so mandatory belaying with a rope is required. Since there is forest above or trees, they can also be quite practically used for belaying without placing technical aids in the wall, although some bolts (without hangers) are already installed in the rock. Well, the locals – together with all the knowledge and experience of Vili, have many more ideas with these rocks.
But already now … interesting addition and spice to the mountain trip, especially if you are from or near Ljubljana.

work on the wall.2
it already looks much nicer.3
climbing with a view, the view from the top is really beautiful.4
caution - not without equipment!5
at the little church on the top they are currently arranging under-concreting of the foundations and drainage.6
I wouldn't recommend climbing without ropes7

Cyclists are pedaling on the Giro, meanwhile I take shorter bike tours and today I arrived at Miklavž just after nine in the morning. The summit was deserted when I arrived and for a few minutes I admired the surroundings in solitude.
