Thanks, same to you. When making the plan for this route I came across your route description via Dogna to Montaž and descent via Norina too. Can only say... hats off

Ps: " Beautiful, wild, solitary and quite a long path that takes away your city energy and fills you at least for a day with what we really seek in the mountains. "

These solitary corners of the Julian Alps attracted me too. I did the tour on 18/19.6.2024. I ascended to Strma peč from the Dunja valley, descended to Planina Pecol. I overnighted in the CAI Cividale bivouac. I forded the Dunja stream a bit higher than the former bridge - water about knee-deep. The path through the beech forest to the bivouac is very steep, tree markings are very helpful as the trail itself is often obscured by leaves. Not many people go up there lately. No need to carry water to the bivouac (900m elevation gain!), there's a spring 2 minutes before it that turns into a real stream at this time. Further on towards the start of the via ferrata you cross several streams, not sure if there's water there constantly through summer. The bivouac is excellently maintained, cushions comfortable. The last and only entry this year was a month ago. In 2023 there were only 10 entries, most didn't overnight. The path from bivouac to the start of Norina was the most demanding part for me. The path is hard to follow in places, markings sparse. Had to cross two large snowfields, snow requires winter gear. The hardest part of the via ferrata for me was the initial vertical wall without proper footholds, especially in winter boots. Then it becomes more ladylike, with pegs and chiselled steps. Views into the depths and the nearby Zabuš wall are breathtaking. The grassy plateaus on the south side are full of flowers and the ascent to the top of Strma peč was pure relaxation. Return via Vandul notch to Pecol, where my bike waited in the forest. Rode it down Reklanska valley to Kluž and past Dunja to the car. A tour that leaves a strong impression.

Those of us who go to these parts, the parking fee in Vrata... leaves us cold

The beauty and more of the rear Julians and Karnians, not to mention the Dolomites, is the reason I haven't done the crowds in Vrata since '92.

Congrats! Does anyone know why Norina is officially closed?

Norina is closed because of the destroyed bridge. They say that when the water is high or during flash floods it's actually impossible to cross and the tour ends before it even starts. It's been like that for years.

Wow, hats off. Those two paths (651 and 655) were a big mystery to me and what little I heard was more in the style of "it's impossible at all". Now finally a report from someone who dared to go and check. Definitely useful info on conditions. Thanks.

According to CAI FVG info here https://www.caicividale.org/in-evidenza-1/ferrata-norina-inagibile the path is officially closed, but as far as I can make out or translate, not because of the ferrata itself, but due to the condition of the approach path. In fact the ferrata is in excellent condition, nothing is missing, actually it seems to me that rarely is any ferrata so exemplarily maintained. Access to it is another story. And here I'm not even thinking of the abandoned path 655 from the Saline stream valley. The usual approach past bivouac Cividale isn't exactly a stroll either. There are markers, but you need to keep your eyes on the marker poles all the time, as you can quickly stray from the right path. Hard to talk about any well-trodden path here, the logbook in the bivouac bears witness to that, which for this year still has less than ten entries. But that's just the greatest charm of Dunja. Remoteness, wilderness, solitude.

thanks jax: this year I walked several sections of the Umberto Pacifico path. Upper part is ok, then there's a road in between, the part we walked now is also ok. As far as I heard the lower part should be problematic, but I haven't gone there myself yet. Path 655 is fully passable though, but need to watch the markers and cairns, as it's not much trodden.

Wonderful funnyboy! Congrats on the solo tour and also the courage for this path choice! Maybe the question, at the junction (pic) of path 651 (Umberto Pacifico) and 640 to Cividale, did you head left, but returned on the right? Did I get it right? Which variant is harder, easier? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, ločanka at the mentioned junction we turned left (651), returned via path 640 which goes straight down from the bivouac. Right continues path 651 to the lower part of Dunja valley (haven't been there yet). To me it seems easier to go that way than we did, if you want to go below Strma peč
