Today we continued with the "exploring" above the Malta valley. In Gmünd we turned onto the road which after 11 km leads to the starting point - Frido-Kordon-Hütte hut. The road is passable with 4x4 or chains, otherwise there might be problems. At the parking lot before the hut we put on skis and began ascending a nice track. First we bypassed the vacation homes settlement Sonnalm – Stubeck on the right side, then briefly through sparse forest, then across the vast Stubeck slope to the summit. The plan was skiing to the other side to the col Torscharte and then ascent along the ridge to the neighboring Poisnig, but this "extension" was dropped because the ridge is mostly blown bare to grass and rocks. So we ended the tour early at the Stubeck summit and enjoyed wonderful views. While the wind almost "relocated" us during the last third of the path, it was surprisingly calm at the summit. Skiing conditions were not excellent, nor very bad either. No trace of powder snow anymore, the summit slope icy and hard as concrete, where the snow is windblown there is a crust that holds in some places, not others. About halfway through the descent we got tired of it and decided on enjoyable zigzagging on the sled track to the car. The descent passed too quickly as always, but it was still "fajn" . There were quite a few touring skiers, all Austrians except us; on the return we met some sledders ascending to the top of the sled track.

I don't know Austrian panoramas best, but from Stubeck I've skied several times and I'm quite sure that on photo 13 there is at least no Ebeneck, but very recognizable Säuleck (that pointy one on the left), highest on the right the "queen" of the High Tauern - Hochalmspitze.

New Year's tour with plenty of snow and sun. Road to hut snowy last 3-4 km. Chains not needed, but definitely recommend having them with you. Lp
