On the first autumn day I went to Primorska for a tour around the Nanos plateau.
In the morning I drive from foggy Ljubljana to Postojna and further to the idyllic and locals-friendly village Šmihel pod Nanosom.
The cycling path leads past the nearby church and winds a bit to the left for quite a while with a slight ascent. All the time we stick to the main road straight. After about 2-3km we turn sharply right uphill at a closed road angle. The path ahead is unmistakable to the junction, where left goes the direct path to Dry Peak (on return), we cross straight towards the settlement Bukovec, Podkraj. The path gently descends for a long time and on flats and slight curves of the nice road we reach up to 35km/h, real enjoyment in the highest gears-shifts. Soon we turn left to Abrama, follows some asphalt road-ascent and we're already out of the dark northern forest. Follows still quite some tough km to bear sighting, then nice descent to the plateau edge, which overhangs into Vipava Valley to the hunting hut in wonderful pine grove. There I turn and climb up the same path a few km to the right forest branch, which holds to Dry Peak and goes a bit higher than the Nanos road branch to Pleša!. Follows still quite some ascent on high mountain road through Vražji dol, in between we cross scavengers area, at road end traverse right on initially wide cut clearing and follow marks on worse forest footpath all to the road visible left down. There navigation worries end and nearby sign shows last direction to Dry Peak. Right to the top need to sling the bike on shoulder.
The tour is landscape-wise extremely beautiful, rich, renewed encounter with the furry one at Abrama and from that karst side of the plateau smell of seaside air mixed with pine scent. If you're hungry, you can fortify well at Abrama with homemade prosciutto or one portion (for one person)  with three pork cutlets and big heap of mashed potatoes with side. No I ate only strudel to successfully reach Dry Peak still. To Abrama from Šmihel 22km (1h45min), otherwise total on path 54km, total riding time from start to car 3h 58 min, avg. speed 13.52km/h 1000m ascent. From Dry Peak nice 17km descent to Šmihel, which brought me to car in 35min.
