Svačica and Klagenfurter Hütte

Today we did a varied tour: Tinčkova koča - Hut at the source of Završnica - Šija saddle - Belščica saddle - Svatica - Celovska Hut - back over Zagon to the starting point. Nice weather, gentians growing in places, plenty of hikers (in three languages), deafening music playing in front of Celovska Hut, prices more affordable than ours. Svatica, which right before the summit is not even so childishly easy to access, really offers wonderful panoramic views of better and for some also less known parts of the Karavanke. The trip will remain in good memory. Feelings like in the Julian Alps. I recommend!

Well, yesterday three of us decided on the path to Celovška koča via Vrtača, whose summit we didn't climb, but continued via its eastern scree towards sedlo Belščica, from there to Svačica, then to Celovška koča, where beer fit nicely. We returned through krnica V Kožnah, and via the upper path Stol-Zelenica, to the start at Tinčkova koča. Although the tour is very pleasant (for me the nicest corner of Karavanke), Celovška koča not so distant goal etc.., but on Svačica itself and especially on the Austrian side you don't meet Slovenians. I recommend!

Dušan and I also climbed to Svačica today on the descent from Stol and Krkotnik and unlike Heinz met quite a few Slovenians up there, as everyone was looking for the last sun rays before the announced weather deterioration. Very nice and easy path with wonderful views. Best, Andrej

The decision for yesterday's tour was made more "on the fly", consequently poor fitness took its "toll". We drove to Tinčkova koča and headed via unmarked path over Zagon to Svačica. Already at the first unmarked junction we missed – instead of lower right path we went left up – wrong! After about twenty minutes of walking and searching we realized we obviously missed. Then we took time to study the map carefully and realized we had to go more right... and indeed soon successfully "joined" the right path. From there on everything was clear. The wind from previous days had calmed, temperatures practically optimal for hiking, raspberries full along the path ripening... We met quite a few hikers, most heading to Stol or already returning from it, at "our" summit we were alone enjoying unique panoramic views... We descended via sedlo Šija and Smokuška planina (past Dom pri izviru Završnice) back to start and nicely rounded the tour....

Yeah, today one really had to wonder which is the sunny and which the shady side of the Alps or Karavanke. In the morning I head towards Ljubelj. Weather was cloudy and it drizzled lightly to moderately all the way to the top of the pass. I was wondering if it'd be enjoyable to hike at all in such. Then, when I come out of the tunnel to the Austrian side - completely different weather: partly cloudy with frequent clearings and sun rays. Well, that weather is just right for hiking - not too hot. On the way down from the pass I turn towards Bodental or Slovenian Plajberk. A bit further from the village signs for Gasthaus Bodenbauer (Podnar) start. Since parking is for guests, I park by the road and go ask the owner if I can park there. Conversation in German develops, asks where I'm going, if I return same day and warns of possible bad weather (which luckily doesn't happen later). Then asks where I'm from. I say Slovenia "Why don't you speak Slovenian!?", mildly scolds me in nice Carinthian Slovenian. "I thought you were from Holland!", he adds Well, I set off, open the pasture fence wire as it says also in Slovenian "open with plastic handle!" and first meet a herd of cows. The bull starts pushing towards me and I step back a couple steps. Then he leaves, I go on. Had to show who's boss! Then continue to Märchenwiese, well there the path starts ascending but until the start of the climbing part over Stince it's not that steep. From the junction with path from Vgriza it mildly ascends scree, then wire ropes start. Climbing part is exposed (but not insanely) the wires (except a few spots) are more for slip protection and not so much for progress. From end of climbing to Celovška koča still less than half hour. Along the way Vrtača with its mighty wall should be visible but it was in clouds. Similar bad luck continues all the way. From Celovška koča Stol not visible and the whole ridge right of sedlo Belščica in clouds. Occasionally only Celovška špica peeks out. At the hut I sit a bit then head to Svačica. Wire and following rock jump cause no trouble. Just before saddle a path branches left. After some 5 min reaches border ridge. While Austrian side nicely shows Celovška koča and almost whole Kozjak and almost idyllic clear, Slovenian side in complete fog. Continue to Svačica. Path becomes quite steep then levels and again steeply but somewhat less rises. Before summit we have to do short ridge. It's exposed, technically not too hard for average mountaineer. Couple more meters and I'm at summit. Fog cleared a bit meanwhile and hope awakens that I'll at least get a view of Vrtača if Stol stays in clouds. But as the poet to whom the hut below is dedicated wrote, hope this time too is 'deceitful snake'. I head down and after that steep part back to border ridge. This time go other side over the saddle back. On way back an Austrian family has small trouble over that rock jump so I advise they can go around just before its top. When back at Celovška koča and sit I see a tied dog at fence starting to whine. Think it's thirsty and fill bowl chained to spring and offer. Apparently not, as it only dipped tongue a bit and whined on. Then go to Kosiak (Kozjak). That's what the mountain is called. Nowhere Geissberg (let alone Ovčji vrh) on signs and summit only Kosiak. Path starts if go road couple dozen meters towards Bärental then up (no sign, but well visible from Svačica path) not overly steep except maybe a bit in upper part. Above on cross memorial plaques for deceased climbers among others Bergfreund Jörg Haider No, Stol won't be seen today and I bid farewell to view of it as main Karavanke ridge still in fog. But on other side nicely visible Celovec, Drava valley and intermediate hills. Kozjak nice example of easily accessible two-thousander without technical difficulties. Who wants to avoid also somewhat harder part over Stince (kids, dog) should approach Celovška koča from Bärental from where nice forest path goes to it. Descend on somewhat steeper path joining Stince path somewhere between Celovška koča and top of climbing part. After some 20 min back at wires and descend. When back at junction with Vgriza path, detour to Ogrisalm. From there both my today's goals nicely visible. Vrtača still in clouds. Descend back to junction and down same way I came to Podnar. There inn already closed, so beer on way back to Ljubelj at Deutsche Petr. Although on descent from Stince to Podnar already clouding a bit, now enjoy beer in almost complete clarity. Well, when out of Ljubelj tunnel back to Slovenia again greeted by gloomy cloudy weather. Really, which side of Karavanke is actually supposed to be the sunny one?

Today on Svačica from Ljubelj via Zelenica and path to Vrtača. At western saddle below Vrtača we went over scree, but still many snow patches so careful. Careful also at top of approach ridge which is still covered with brush, there along path we ran into two adders.

Thursday 19.7. ...Svačica via Zagon... Road in last part to Tinčkova hut quite torn up. Parked a bit lower. Stream in Kožnah nice and path surrounded by flowers. Side paths quite overgrown, full of greenery everywhere. At top wonderful views and no visitors. http://jelenkamenmajdag.blogspot.com/2018/07/svacica.html

Can someone tell about difficulty of this path itself and orientation difficulty? Thanks. Tinčkova koča in Završnica – Zagon – V Kožnah – Sedlo Belščica – Svačica – Grad – Vrtača – Mala glava – Dom pri izviru Završnice – starting point.
