Svačica and Kozjak above Celovška Hut

If on the path between Zelenica and Stol, at the start of the large scree field, you turn north to the Austrian side - signs for Celovška koča (Klagenfurter Hütte), you first reach the Belščica saddle or Bielschitzsattel (1840m). From there it's worth climbing to Svačica or Bielschitza (1958m), from where e.g. there's a beautiful view of the north faces of Stol and Vrtača, the path is well marked, not demanding, except in the last part (which somewhat resembles e.g. our Mala Planiška Ponca or Mali Draški vrh). From the saddle descend about 200m to the friendly Celovška hut (less than 1/2 hour walk), from there e.g. choose the path to nearby Kozjak or Ovčji vrh or also Friedrich Zop-Weg or Geisberg (2024m). The path is well marked, easy, scenic throughout, to the summit less than 1 hour, descent to the hut possible also from the west side of the mountain. Kozjak unlike rocky Svačica is nicely grassy and green at the top, and reminds us somewhat of our Vajnež. All these Austrian paths are exemplarily marked and maintained.

Today the desire for a longer tour gripped me again, in which I (with Rexi) did a whopping 2000m elevation and who knows how many km.. Most of the day spent in Austria. Start at Žaga below Tinčkova hut (Završnica) and then on -over Zagon-, V Kožnah-, Sedlo Belščica-, Celovška hut-, Kosiak (Geissberg)-, Mačenska planina-, Stouhuette hut-, sedlo Medvedjak (pl. Seče)-, Dom Trilobit (tour end). Again nearly 10 hours including all stops. Conditions: In Kožnah, at (below) sedlo Belščica and below Medvedjak only some snow remnants with bypass option. Both huts in Austria closed, only at Celovška I chatted with the warden who had just brought something. Met some forest and mountain dwellers. Nice but quite demanding tour due to lots of ascent and descent, and much walking on forest road. Emphasis on -"nice"!

Certain sections are really interesting, especially those special rock shapes attract me.....Of course the biggest congratulations go to Rexi!

That boulder from the second picture is really huge.. In the cirque in Kožnah through which the upper and lower paths Zelenica-Stol go, there are quite a few.. Worth visiting! Rexi gladly accepts any praise / congratulations

Heinz, do you have any experiences with dog encounters and reactions to such a reptile as in the picture from the top of Golica, photographed by gorski svizec. When I go to the mountains with the dog I'm always careful in suspicious places where we might encounter such specimens, especially in spring.

Just yesterday we encountered in Baerental on the forest road almost the exact same specimen as in the mentioned picture. Rexi didn't notice it, and I only spotted it right in front of my foot (almost stepped on it). Once when we were on Klek, it was lying right by the path curled up... the dog ahead of me passed just a few cm (didn't notice it again), when I approached, it uncurled, hissed and fled down the slope. Also last time on Begunjščica, it didn't care much, if it knew what it was this time. I don't show him adders, while I try to direct his attention (though with difficulty) to some blindworms, which he also doesn't pay much attention to. I notice caution. I think he would only attack if I encouraged him. For now - no incidents.

I'm also interested in what to do if a snake bites a dog in the mountains. You can't watch it all the time, although in places where I expect snakes, it walks behind me. Probably I would grab the snake if I saw it. The instructions say to bring it to the vet as soon as possible without additional movement. In the mountains that's a bit harder to do. You can't carry a big dog alone. Unless you bivouac and wait for the poison to subside, at least a few hours, whatever. If you call GRS, many won't agree to call them because of a dog. Best regards.

Hard to believe you'd grab it, even if you saw it. I think the animal senses when it needs to be careful. Anyway, I'm also interested if anyone has experience with a snake bite on a dog. How many such cases are there, are they fatal, etc.?

Today in sunny weather circular from Zaga to Zavrsnica-Vrtača-Svačica and via Zagon back. Paths follow nicely, quite a few km up and distance scree under Vrtača and Stol drags on. Approximate time about 8h. Svačica impressed me, great peak...
