Hello Since we have to visit the Soča valley in the near future (mid-April) (and consequently "conquer" some peaks), I'm interested in the snow conditions on Rombon and Mangart. In my opinion, there's still quite a lot of snow that will linger into May, so winter gear is definitely needed. Or am I wrong? ;-) Best regards from "this" end

If there's over 5m on Kanin, then around there accordingly (a lot). Mid-April, this year also mid-May and June, "winter gear" will definitely be mandatory (in high mountains), especially on north sides. Anyway, better to have ice axe and crampons with you and not need them, than to be without and turn back, or God forbid, push one's head through the wall. Good luck!

As seen from the valley, Kanin above 1800 is still deeply snow-covered.

Kanin and Rombon are two beautiful mountains, somehow in the same range but can't be compared regarding snow. Currently there's significantly less snow on Rombon than on Kanin. On the path from Zavrzelno to Čukla the trail is dry, snow starts just below Čukla and behind Čukla, then through Naklo (gully) snowy, the summit part is mostly dry, snow mostly holds well. Of course an ice axe isn't superfluous, crampons in the gully if frozen. Similar situation from Kluž direction. Regarding the road over Predel, now on the section from Strmca to Predel there's quite an extensive construction site (today three traffic lights), in Italy no peculiarities. Anyway, it's late spring, Predel is only 1156 m high or maybe antika was interested in something else, I don't know what that could be.

No, the road is closed, full of rocks and from the first hairpin above the alpine pasture also snowy.

On Rombon snow still persists, but that shouldn't be a problem, because there is equipment to help. The road to Mangart saddle is still closed, and probably it will snow again soon; before June 15th, it's hard for it to be passable.

I was on Rombon on 24.5. Snow starts below Čuklo. In the gully there is a steep snowfield so I overcame it with crampons. The south side is mostly bare and normally passable

We were on Rombon on 14.06.09 from the direction of Kluže past point 1313; snow on the southern part is minimal, only at Vršiči 1753m there is one snow band. But if we go via Čukla direction Naklo on the marked path to Rombon there is quite a lot of snow. In the gully at 2000m we need ice axe and crampons.
