He was the elder statesman of Slovenian Himalayan climbing, an indispensable member and leader of expeditions to the world's highest peaks. It's been about half a year since I had the chance to listen to him at Borut's mountaineering evening in Domžale. Worth listening to. Tone, rest in peace! https://domzalec.si/tone-skarja-spomini-staroste/

How well he knew how to describe the excitement of a young soul awaiting the uncertainty of the military draft call - 'the wind rushes into my shadow. But it can't carry it away'; or the youthful underestimation of the ability to handle harsh conditions and its consequences - 'What a six, this is scree (Rzenik). Punishment awaited us...' (Walls of My Life). I don't know how many times I read it... Of course, I then devoured the sequel The Old Man and the Mountains, or more precisely, On My Own Trail. Some incredibly sharp but precise notes on our hard-to-understand and mostly extremely successful(?) Slovenian alpine history (Česen, Svetičič, Humar, Prezelj). The rest will be deep and frankly written books; admiration for how someone could understand the circumstances and raise funds for numerous expeditions in times of one-party ideologies, the ensuing wild transition, and our chaotic capitalism; and the impression that with effort, persistence, and work out of the spotlight, much can be achieved. May the memory live long!
