If you're up for some solitude, pathless terrain and shepherd tracks, head to Skutnik. There are two possible starting points: one from Mangart pasture, the other from Jeza towards Stoži.
I get up early and head towards the beauties...

Yesterday's trip in the beautiful surroundings above Rablje. Larches sadly already fading, but some colors my friend and I still caught. After the visit to V. Grintavec back to the valley via the approach route. It surprised me that we met no one all day ...

Volk and Tomiš, isn't it nice when there's peace and quiet. What do you get from the procession walking to Triglav.
If it was a bit earlier we would surely meet.

Sunday, 5.2. After skiing in Trbiž, I decide for one more afternoon ascent.
Start at Mangart turnoff, where it's a warm -8 degrees. Path takes me along Mangart road to Stožje clearing, turn left uphill to forest. Quite some snow, if not old crust then blown powder. Conditions worse in forest. Sometimes wading to knees, elsewhere slipping on leaves... Above treeline I think now it'll be firm snow. But no. Dwarf pines with wet snow suck me several times to neck (not small nasmeh). Struggle good 300m till below rock. Rest, tea, chocolate and crampons on for climbing. From here heart sings ideal conditions. To top rock-ice, rock-snow then snow again. Top darkness catching. Thermometer -18, quick pic and back fast.
Descent snowflakes company, moon replaces headlamp. Perfect day

A nice Saturday afternoon trip from Mangart highland to Skutnik and back to Strmec. Only sound heard on path was cracking and rumbling of avalanches on Loška stena.

I drive by car to Mlinč, where I park, then my daughter and I are driven by another car to Rajbelj, where we take path 511 La Portella. Along a nice forest path that climbs quite steeply, we reach the La Portella saddle at 1798m, then to the saddle above Sinji Dol where we descend the valley. On the way I also go to Skutnik-M. Guarda, then we go along a nice forest path to the Stožje scree, then along the scree to Mlinč where we have the car. Nice afternoon hike, the beautiful views slightly spoiled by fog that was very thick on the Italian side.

Sunday, 16.12. The morning was quite inviting into the new snow.
From cloudy Strmc I go along the road to Mlinč, turn onto Mangart road and at the bridge onto the footpath to the pasture. I soon leave the marked path and tackle the snowy Stožje scree. Snow up to my knees, on top ice crust, underneath powder. Fog accompanies me all the way but at the exit from the forest the sun breaks it. The path to the summit was very very demanding but rewarded with beautiful views around. I imagined the descent a bit differently. I slid my butt down the snow toboggan.
I finish the tour past Jeza then along the water channel back to Strmc. nasmeh

no problem if the photos don't follow in order. I enjoy each one individually and it doesn't matter at which moment of your ascent it was taken.

Just the right conditions for snow lessons. We hop around the scree which is hard with a thin layer of slush. Short break at the top, then slide down the gojzerji into the valley. Unforgettable daynasmeh

Yesterday I used the day for wandering around the border peaks. Snow conditions solid, couloirs filled, avalanches only on surrounding mountains, sun didn't break through the clouds.nasmeh

Since there was still plenty of time after skiing, I head out from Mlinč for a little wander. Initially planned to Mangart saddle but changed my mind and turn towards Skutnik. Little snow on Stožje scree but thickness increased soon in the forest. Partly southern, elsewhere almost bare and towards the top nice hard crust with powder. Since I still had time, I climb towards Vršič and over Stožje home in the dark.

15.10.2024. It had been planned for some time. Last time we walked down there when going from Predel to Vršič. Now we chose the path from Mangart pasture. There's confusion about naming this peak. On some maps it's Skutnik. But Skutnik is southeast. It was nicely visible from the top. And Križgor. Torre Guarda, where we went, the state border runs along the ridge. Between Slovenia and Italy. Our path was circular. Left of the pasture we crossed the Stože earth scree. Higher we found a path and reached a traceable path going towards the saddle between Vršič and Veliki Grintavec. Then we turn left off the path onto an old path leading under Mali Grintavec. Someone put up a cairn. It gets steeper and steeper. And more scree. We decide to go past the cairn to check higher if passable. But we turn back because impassable. For grip the scree is safest. Terrain is quite crumbly. We continue to the summit. Getting more panoramic. We go to the end of the ridge where there's a memorial for mountain rescuers who died in the mountains. We descend the same path. Into the steepness to Sinji Dol. For a while on marked path. We choose unmarked path a bit further because it seems more comfortable than the one we took last time returning from Vršič. On the way down we check out Mala and Velika Ruša. Two interesting peaks. Few probably go up there. We finish the tour at Mangart pasture. Nice day behind us. nasmeh

Beautiful spots, especially in deep winter. Touring skis or snowshoes, and some easy gully, there's always something. Oh, locals call the Sinji dol valley Sindol.

Bojan, to be honest I was a bit skeptical about this last visit to Skutnik, or Torre Guarda. Would we even find the path to the top? But no problems. If you're used to pathless terrain, such paths are the best. After going to these areas a few times, everything becomes more familiar. nasmeh

Yes, it's beautiful there in the screes. I've roamed around there many times, on dry ground and in snow, in those years when the late Bernard was still at the alpine pasture, as long as there was livestock up there. If we made it to the saddle, then to the hut if it was open. Erik and Vanda, legends. Before that in Pinki, Bc, then up there.
