Traverse Bogatin - Vrh nad Škrbino

On Thursday, 16.6., we completed the mentioned traverse. On Wednesday evening we headed from Savica to Koča pod Bogatinom, where we overnighted. Early in the morning we set off to Bogatinsko sedlo, then climbed the following peaks: Bogatin, Mahavšček, Vrh Škrli, Vrh Planje, Tolminski kuk, Zeleni vrh, Podrto goro and Vrh nad Škrbino. No special features on the path itself, except a bit of easier climbing on Podrto goro. The fixed protections on Vrh nad Škrbino are in impeccable condition. From Škrbina we descended to Planina za Migovcem, where we found the hunting path to Ukanc. The path is easy to follow, just at a few spots a bit more searching is needed (thanks to Peter 2 for path info). The whole path is very scenic, but physically demanding. From Koča pod Bogatinom to Ukanc we took 12 hours with one longer lunch break and a few shorter stops.

Felix, great pictures. This magnificent ridge traverse where you step on eight peaks I also want to hike. Your pictures are an incentive to hurry up there ASAP. Good luck, and I wish you many more such views.nasmeh

On Friday late afternoon we climbed from Savica to Koča pod Bogatinom where we stayed (very friendly staff and good kitchen). Saturday morning continued to Bogatinsko sedlo, Mali Bogatin, Mahavšček, Vrh Škrli, Vrh Planje, Tolminski Kuk, Zeleni vrh, Podrta gora, Vrh nad Škrbino then to Planina Razor where we overnighted. Sunday morning ascent to Vogel then descent under Šija to Merjasec.
Fantastic tour, thanks Felix for desc and challenge.
Highly recommend.

On Wednesday 15.8. we did the tour from Savica to Komna to Mahavšček, then back towards Tolminski Kuk and on to Vrh nad Škrbino from which we descended to Planina Razor where we slept.

Ukanc - Vrh nad Škrbino - Vogel - Rjava skala - below cable car to Ukanc station. Ridge circular path. From Ukanc station for a while along Žagarjev graben, then pathless trail through Ukanško suho. Further below Ražnova suho to planina za Migavcem. On the way cairns.
Then along marked path to Škrbina. Further along the ridge over Meja, Rušnati vrh and Snežni vrh to preval Globoko. Along marked path to Vogel. Further along marked path past Orlove glave to Ski hotel. Continuation along Mirnjak ridge under cable car. The path is hard to follow, steep, overgrown, partly visible hard-to-follow trail, no cairns or marks. Caution needed due to terrain slope. The path ends at Ukanc station - walked with GPS help. Weather fantastic, views superb. Ridge path well trodden and followable, unmarked but no special difficulties on it, except in wet or fog.

For the entire described path - effective = 7 h 30 min, photographing, lunch, rests, observing surroundings additional 3 h 30 min. Too beautiful to rush, so total 11 hours.
To gondola and down with it to valley approx. 8-9 hours. For me
the path under cable car took a lot of time, I advise against it. Better variant, if deciding to walk down, is straight along Žagar to the start, faster and safer.

The traverse of the Lower Bohinj Mountains can't be compared to Jovan's traverses, but it's still interesting, scenic and with the ascent to Podrta gora sufficiently demanding. I started the tour at Orlove glave, from where I climbed to preval Globoko and traversed Snežni vrh (also Vrh Planje) along a very sharp ridge towards Rušnat vrh. An unmarked easier path branches off the Vogel – Konjsko sedlo path behind Snežni vrh. Wandering along the ridge over Rušnat vrh and Meja to Vrh nad Škrbino is a real pleasure. The path is unmarked but well visible. Then, after descent to Škrbina, I first climbed to Vrh Konte, an excellent viewpoint to the Primorska side as well as Bohinj. To Podrta gora I went from Mali vrh along the western ridge of Podrta gora, where there is a somewhat harder spot when transitioning from the north side of the ridge to the south. The ascent through the rocks to the summit is pure pleasure. On descent along the south slope, caution is needed due to friability and scree. This was followed by an ascent over Zeleni vrh to Tolminski Kuk. Here I ended the traverse and descended from Planja saddle to Planina Govnjač, then to Komna and back past Savica to the lower cable car station at Vogel.

This traverse sounds very inviting, and if we skip Podrta gora summit, probably just the right difficulty for many, with plenty of great views. Already planning it!
