Gorjanci are a rugged, overgrown plateau-like hill range, which has interesting roads and paths also for mountain biking, the terrain is not too large or extensive, although you can get lost in the vast forests, the climbs and slopes are not too demanding or you can choose them by difficulty and your own fitness. The only major shortcoming or obstacle is the state border and currently increased presence of police and army, … well, neither refugees nor bears did we see during our biking, there were even fewer hikers and the police left us alone too. To the top of Gorjanci you usually start from the village of Gabrje (from NM we come via Otočec), along a relatively nice and flat gravel forest road we then arrive at the junction at Bloody Stone, then depending on time and desire for exploration, we make the further plan, which offers several options, but Trdinov Peak – as the highest peak of this range usually takes priority. So from that crossroads (Bloody Stone) we turn right towards Gospodična and on the road, a bit before it, there is also a marked turnoff left uphill to Trdinov Peak. Towards the summit the road gets a bit steeper, but nothing special, which we smoothly reach soon. A little below the summit is the Croatian barracks and below it on the south side the extensive landscape park Žumberak - Samoborsko gorje, on the flat "our summit" there is room for two little churches (Slovenian and Croatian), a large TK tower, radio shack and viewpoint platform. Variant 1: From Trdinov Peak we descend back by road towards Gospodična, where the mountain hut stands, from there we can go by forest road to Vahta pass and then down to Črmošnjice, from there towards Gabrje. For such biking a regular mountain bike or a trek with good tires is sufficient. Variant 2 (also presented in the pictures below): From Trdinov Peak we descend to the Croatian barracks and below it we turn off the road past the meadow hayracks, where along the edge of the forest there is also a marked hiking path, eastwards towards Cerov log or towards Ravna gora. Here you can find also (shown on YouTube) a nice singletrack descent, which we ride in the upper part, then we – when we reach the forest road, turn left there and bike along a fairly comfortable and flat path towards Miklavž. At Miklavž there is a nice new mountain hut open, although the former old one standing next to it still gives off some historical vibe, also to the little church standing right above it you can easily bike. From Miklavž we then quickly return by road towards Bloody Stone, from there we also check out the hut at Gospodična. Near the hut at Gospodična there is also a hunting cabin, under which a footpath leads, then down the valley a bit on trails, a bit on steep cart tracks towards Jugorje and if you have a good full-suspension bike and good tires, don't miss this adrenaline descent from this trip. But heed the warning: head for fun, not for everyone, if you're not used to it and don't have the right gear and experience. And thanks to Stane for his exceptional knowledge of all the small and hidden forest paths on Gorjanci.
