We know Azerbaijan from Eurovision, less so its mountains. A group of nine of us did a seven-day trek in the valley above Laza (south) and climbed the 4191m high peak Tufandag. On the way we successfully crossed (forded) the rushing river several times daily, camped by it twice, third day started more serious ascent to the mountain. Last camp before summit just below 3000m. We started early in the morning and by 11am already on top, which gave luxurious views in fine weather. We wanted loop trail, so left summit via eastern ridge. On way to valley set last camp, next day to valley and to Baku. In town and area explored cultural sights and went stone age in Gobustan. Azerbaijan too has nice mighty mountains, hard to compare with our beauties. But sometimes nice to peek elsewhere nasmeh
