V. Alan - Kugina House 15.07.2005

Dear,

The descriptions of the trips around V. Alan that you provide are very good and quite detailed.
No summer passes without my wife and me visiting V. Alan for a couple of days.
Every day then we do one more demanding circuit of the mentioned routes.
The path V. Alan - Zavižan (and back) is especially impressive and we never miss it.
However, I want to draw attention to another section: V. Alan - Kugina house. It is not my goal to discourage anyone, criticize or the like.
At that time I did not know that there are three variants for K.K.
On 15.07.2005 we set off from V. Alan towards Kugina house along the Premužić trail.
After about 5 hours of walking, shortly before Korita (well with drinking water below the trail, about 20 min), we meet a young couple who tell us that
for about 1 hour we must leave the trail and head upwards. Now it seems to me, and after talking with people familiar with that area,
that it is Težakov brijeg (not sure!).
After Korita the trail becomes narrower and difficult, full of brushwood up to about 2 m.
On the right side of the trail is an abyss from whose opposite side sheep can be heard and smelled, and
on the left the terrain rises.
Truly beautiful!
At 18:10 we come upon a clear signpost for K.K. upwards and begin the ascent.
The ascent does not last long and turns right into the forest.
STILL the marked path goes through what seems an almost tame landscape, gently climbing, although the marks are old, leading alternately through forest and meadow.
Judging by the trash, yogurt cups and beer bottles (very unusual), one would say no one has been there for years. Yet this inventory seems to have been part of the marking.
The area is truly beautiful and almost untouched.
Around 19:30 on the actual ascent, when the path narrowed and fully entered the sparse forest, there is no more 'm' mark.
Tired at 19:45 I throw my backpack on the ground and decide: We overnight here!
My wife searched for marks in the surroundings until dark night, but nothing.
Of course there is no sleeping. We sit on our bags and wait for some 'visit' from say 450 kg or some 'friendly howling'.
At 4:00 the sheep guard dogs on the mentioned right side of the Premužić trail start desperate barking.
At whom are they barking? There is no car, no people...
I had not even finished the thought when I hear now on our side, about 1-2 km from us, a 'roar' from movies: auuuu, auuuu, ...
We start packing (and looking back). It is not heard anymore.
We return to the Premužić trail, meet a fox, smell the meadow fresh with dew.
We overnight at Ograđenica. Wow, it's BEAUTIFUL there!
Later I learn that we should have just continued along the Prem. trail and not turned off.

Velebit is UNIQUE AND UNREPEATABLE!
Now I have a problem. We would go with our bitch, retriever-terrier, she loves hiking, 1 year old.
Is there any advice regarding ticks etc.?
Thanks.
Greetings to all!

As for ticks... there is less likelihood of them in the summit area even though there are some...
so long pants, gaiters... and no fear, the tick stays home and keeps off the path...
Caution only with free climbing / check where you place your hand, but you will probably do less of that considering the bitch...
