Vaccination against ticks

Hello everyone, yesterday when I went for a short walk in the forest I "collected" three ticks on myself in just one hour. It made me think... What do you think, does it make sense to get vaccinated against tick-borne diseases? Apparently especially Gorenjska ticks are among the most infectious in Europe. High mountains are not dangerous, the problem is walking in forests.

I had 5 ticks over the weekend. And these weren't my first this year. I should have gone for the booster dose of vaccine after 5 years (this year) but now it's too late. I can do it later, they don't complicate if you miss a year. Vaccination makes sense but you can only vaccinate against TBE and not all strains. For Lyme and everything else ticks carry there's no vaccine. In my opinion this vaccination is ok since TBE consequences are worse than vaccination side effects. I think this year is the year of ticks.

I was at the infectious clinic in Ljubljana. My roommates got tick-borne meningitis. It's such a terrible and horrific disease that there's no dilemma vaccinate or not. If I didn't know about both roommates' illness, I'd say they are incorrigible and chronic liars. They couldn't distinguish at all what is reality and what fantasy. Meningitis shows with fever, headache, vomiting. If encephalitis joins meningitis, sleepiness, hand or tongue tremor can appear, even worse consciousness disorders, speech, balance, behavioral disorders, autonomic nervous system disorders. If the spinal cord is affected, numbness (paresis) or paralysis of various muscle groups, mainly shoulder girdle and hip area and proximal muscles of upper and lower limbs. Pareses appear asymmetrically and recover poorly and often cause permanent disability. If respiratory muscles affected, artificial ventilation needed and these patients often remain tied to ventilator aid till end of life.

We are all vaccinated, two adults and three kids. Kids vaccinated from second year on. With vaccination, except a day or so of sore arm, no problems. I had surely 100 ticks last year, after one trip in Polhograjci I counted 15. This year so far managed without, but kids already had some. In short, I warmly recommend vaccination. For Lyme there's really no vaccine, but antibiotics exist for it.

Against tick meningitis it's of course not wrong to vaccinate. But still I think they emphasize it too much at the expense of Lyme disease in desire to sell as much vaccine as possible. Lyme is also a terrible disease. That's why you need to check after every trip. I've discovered quite some ticks that way but two years ago with one a redness and ring started forming. Doctor gave me antibiotics and it was fine after. Second stage is already treated with IV antibiotics, to third god forbid it comes. Severe health problems can last till end of life though not directly deadly.

It's true. No joking with ticks. In November on a trip from Kum I met a tick and in December ended up in hospital with tick meningoencephalitis. Only good immune system and general good health saved me so consequences aren't too severe. They are still there though. I advise everyone (as long as it doesn't happen to you, you think what you like), to get vaccinated, because many don't have such luck as I do. This year I'll have to give up strenuous high mountain exploits it seems

I was like bait for ticks until I started using Forth spray, green can in pharmacy. After that never even one. Recommend!

This spray seems really effective. I use it when mushroom picking, and I also have no problems with ticks. But it's true that I avoid contact with branches, undergrowth as much as possible.

I agree with lepenatkin's writing. Same experience, same (thank God) without permanent consequences. Horrific disease, for me personally the most horrific I've ever had. I recommend vaccination!!!!

Last time before crossing Karman I thoroughly sprayed pants, shirt and the rest with the content of the above mentioned green can. At that I had long sleeves and pant legs tucked into socks. I kept shaking them off the pants, but at the end of the tour I had to remove two. Before that I had none when using this repellent. This year there are really crazy many ticks.

Yes, really, also on Thursday from Breški Jalovec I had quite a few. All small specimens.
