Vancovec first caught my eye years ago on Križna gora, when I was looking towards Selška valley and noticed a prominent unknown peak, completely standalone with a beautiful silhouette. To the right behind it views opened to Črna Prst and its neighborhood. What beauty could that be, I wondered and inquired further. Well, over time this image got a name too, Vancovec it should be nasmeh

. The name was something special too, I liked it right away. But what good is that when nobody knew anything about it, no paths to it, no views from the top, no descriptions. Practically nothing online either, just some pics from 2009 and disappointment about crawling to the top and hunters' annoyance over the post. Nothing suggested I'd ever step on its summit, but the wish remained nasmeh

Then a week ago we got info there's a forest track allowing decent access to the summit. Well, yesterday the wish finally came true. I managed to enthuse Jože too, since it's easier in two when exploring something new.
We drove to Železniki and towards Smolevo and parked on some saddle. At the start we walked through a small clearing, so there were even some views from the path. Koprivnik was visible and on the edge to Blegoš. We stuck to the same track despite turnoffs right and left, and when we reached about 100 m below the summit, we headed straight up the slope and through a sea of ramsons reached the ridge-like summit, where after a few meters we found a cairn of stacked stones with a metal summit mark. From the other side we noticed a faint path, well maybe there was no need to go straight up the slope like we did. On the return we descended also over the summit of Kal back to the starting point.

On the whole path only peace and quiet, nobody anywhere. Only the rustling of the wind in the treetops was all that could be heard. On the path we surprised a deer that was running towards us, but it turned quite quickly, and it was already gone.
A little below the summit a silent flyby of an owl, which skillfully flew between the tree trunks and suddenly vanished from sight. Mysterious is this Vancovec, but from now on a little less, since we already know one little part of it nasmeh
