Various useful sources for abroad,.. ITA-AUT-SLO

Hi!

Last year I started doing tours abroad. It seems good to me to have one thread where various markings abroad and in Slovenia are broken down and compared, so that things are clearer and information on path conditions, various sources, maps, etc. is put into one thread.

I would be grateful if someone with more experience adds something. I'll add some things myself. I hope it's accurate.

SLOVENIA:

Sources:

Phone: Locus Map app from Google Play Store, basic maps are generally OK for hills, 1:25,000 PZS maps cost around 2 euros each for mountains.

TRANSLATION OF WEB PAGES

For translation from foreign pages, I think the easiest is to use the Chrome browser and its quite accurate translation option either to Slovenian or to English. Firefox and Edge do not work that way, only Chrome!

ITALY:

Tabacco maps are the most used. Markings on the map are similar to ours. Exception: Italians often use a dashed red line for difficult paths. In Slovenia, I would classify some such paths as easy - solid red line. Normal paths are marked with a flag shape. Sometimes a number is added, e.g., 134. This numbering is to better distinguish individual different paths and not confuse them with another marked path. A painted red triangle is used on tours like the border ridge Velika Baba, Planja, Črni Vogel - Kanin, i.e., High Resian path. Another example is one short section from Torre Clampil to Rosskofel. This most likely means a high alpine tour with very difficult difficulty. Maybe even more.

Ferrata difficulty marking is different from ours. F, PD, D, TD, ED. F is the easiest in Italy, ED the hardest! Be careful here not to confuse it with the Slovenian and Austrian classification, where E is the hardest. To avoid confusion between the letters F and E. Some easier alpine paths are marked with a red dot. Example: border ridge Ponce - Strug - Vevnica on the Slo-Ita border.

If a path is closed, it is marked with "NO". Then there is no way forward, so DO NOT go there for some reasons, if it says no ("NO"), do not proceed there.
Example: one section in the Montaška group on the Anita Goitan path, the shorter section is closed, the longer one goes a bit around, as far as I remember.

Emergency call: 118 or 112

AUSTRIA:

Marking is the Austrian flag with numbering on the sign for additional subdivision. Ferratas are classified as with us. For various beginner alpine paths or on the border, I don't know how it is in Austria.

I think that for weather the best source is the official state meteorological institute of the respective country and not other commercial sites. I haven't found sites with information on closed mountain paths (landslides, etc.) in Italy and Austria, except in Italy for the closest region.

Excellent summary!

Super! Thanks!
I see that we are looking for quite similar data when looking at data for abroad! nasmeh

If anyone else knows some online topo (1:25,000) map for IT and A, suggestions welcome nasmeh

Once I used an excellent Italian map from their geodetic authority, but I can't find it anymore. Something like what our Geopedia (was).

@Bandzo today I searched for that map, but couldn't find anything useful, only ordinary cadastres.

@atomac today I added Bergfex maps.

I use this app for route planning assessment.

https://web.locusmap.app/en/

In the app you can draw the selected route and get data on route length and meters of ascent and descent.
But there are no difficulty markings on the maps like on alpine-hiking maps. The advantage is that the map is quite accurate and covers practically the whole world.
I have the Locus Map app installed on my smartphone too and must say at least for Slovenia that the paths on the map quite accurately match the paths in nature.

In Locus app you can download various maps. Recommend openAndroMaps, free, works offline and shows colored paths by difficulty or type. On link select Slovenia and click Locus button, then it downloads to app.
