Velika Planina and "trail maintenance"

Kamnik and Velika Planina will host the World Mountain Running Championship on September 5.

When I found out about it, I was excited. Finally! It will be a nice event, promotion of the sleeping beauty, and someone will earn something.

Then shock. Apparently, for the competition's needs, a hiking trail is being "maintained".

And my heart ached when I saw it and still haven't fully grasped it, and I don't even know if I'll ever digest this act...

A perfectly nice, undemanding, family-outing suitable and maintained trail has been completely degraded. They attacked it with a mini excavator, widening this "hiking" trail to VP, which now measures around 2.5 meters wide.

The base is completely destroyed, roots pulled out, rocks crushed and scattered on the trail, drainages in mega sizes, fences in places where they really aren't needed, etc...

Our esteemed mayor recently said »The world needs to see Velika Planina as an indigenous and unique pasture in Europe, but we must not forget ecology and nature protection,..«

And now I'm wondering what's the point of these "mountain" runs? There's already a macadam road to VP and if the point of this hill running on easy terrain is such, let "mountain" be removed from the competition name and let the competition be called Run up the hill, the route along asphalt or macadam to Kranjski Rak and onwards to VP...

And then motorized sleds, cyclists represent a problem and threat to the environment on VP,....

And you haven't figured out yet that we are servants.

That mayor already at Tomaž's funeral didn't seem heartfelt and natural to me. When I heard more from others living there, it became even clearer. Of course such a person has no sense for nature preservation, but only for promotion of natural ambience and especially the profit that follows. In the end no one asks about nature if we don't devastate it with this doing.cool

Yes, Viharnik, you are quite right, but this year, with the elections for new mayors, they are apparently collecting points also by intervening in pristine nature.
Nice greetings and good luck.

1. apology for 3x misspelled word tekomvanju > tekmovanju/tekmovanje
obviously showing consequences of mild dyslexia

2. Mayor Smolnikar said that 16 years of ruling is enough and he won't run for mayor this year anymore, so I doubt political point gathering.

Why hasn't anyone photographed this, so at least they can be publicly shamed? Then let them defend themselves - even premje had to hunt for a statement that he can't survive with the miserable three and a half jurjev salary...

As long as you whine here and write heart-wrenching stories, probably nothing will change.

Every organization of (any) competition inevitably means intervention in nature. Often also construction of facilities that will never be fully utilized later. But out of sight, out of mind, right?

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe you are actually ready to stand up, demand explanation, and halt the works.

Sunflower, why dig trails for one ordinary international competition. Nature is wonderful and even more beautiful when man doesn't interfere in it. Instead, our organizers should show nature just as it is, for real runners even a root on the trail wouldn't hinder, but just spice up the whole event.

Did I perhaps advocate such actions anywhere?

I just emphasize that locals usually always suffer from such interventions in nature, but rarely do they really organize into various initiatives etc. Otherwise....."and the caravan moves on".

It's also the case that I can hardly believe such interventions were done without the knowledge (or even consent) of the owners on VP. You can get upset here, locals who otherwise "pester hikers to death", are nicely silent.

velika and mala planina; there construction is allowed under certain conditions; so this forum isn't right for complaining... go to the municipality and pour out your view... and don't incite us others... velika and mala planina hasn't been a gem of untouched nature for a long time! but it's an area full of dog poop and Sunday strollers who think they're fighting for nature in everyone's name, but don't pick up any poop after their darlings! no further because truth hurts!

This "trail maintenance" is carried out by the Velika Planina pastoral community, so don't blame the world championship organizer. The organizer will now, due to this irresponsible action right before the world championship, have huge problems with proper trail preparation.

Apparently I too quickly linked the event and the trail maintenance, for which I sincerely apologize. If nothing else, the warning about this nonsensical action has been raised.

Unfortunately it's not a nonsensical action because now, as they assured me from the pastoral community, the trail for herding cows to Velika Planina will be much easier and safer. The trail was maintained in previous years too but because this year there's the world championship, so much dust has been raised. After inspecting the trail you criticized so much, I myself found that the trail is nicely arranged and safety is well taken care of. There weren't major interventions except fences and water culverts were made, so I hope that those of us running to Velika Planina will achieve good times and focus more on training than on criticizing or go to that trail yourselves and maybe clear some stone and branch.

@cika
The path isn't nicely arranged but a real mess! And don't say there were no major interventions because the pics show real devastation.
