On Saturday my colleague and I were drawn again to the Trentarske hills. The main goal was visiting the still unconquered Veliki Jelenk, but in that unforgettable day we also stepped onto Zagorelec, Šmihelovec and Bavški Grintavec. The only thing that got me annoyed was the camera with empty batteries, so I have only one shot from the first summit, none from the second, on Šmihelovec we stayed a bit longer, so I at least partially recharged the batteries in the hot sun. Rajko and I climbed to Jelenk probably by the most demanding approach, namely through very steep grasses of the eastern slope. The dark thought of return was dispelled by the view from the top, as a nice ridge approach towards Zagorelec showed up. Descent over Luža, ascent to Šmihelovec and over Kanjski preval to Bavški Grintavec was just a nice walk. (B.G. is of course equipped with all the appropriate gear)
Apart from the group on Zagorelec, the girl descending from BG and climbers who stayed on planina Zapotok (sadly one of them probably got seriously injured the next day in the Srebrnjak wall) we met no one in this wonderful day.

Would you be so kind as to describe the route of your approach to Veliki Jelenk? From planina Zapotok?

With pleasure.
Since I've done this path several times, on Saturday we took a shortcut, but for easier understanding I'll describe a slightly longer approach.
From the collapsing hut on planina Zapotok we continue a few steps along the track. Before it turns left uphill, we leave it and continue along the stream bed (or beside it if there's water in it) for about 5 minutes and when we're almost in the headwall, on the left we notice a small side waterfall coming from Srebrnjak slopes. Here we replenish water. At the waterfall we go right uphill on a wide overgrown scree and when we reach the steep wall, we turn right through grass among sparse trees, where we occasionally come across a track. Soon the terrain flattens and we already see first Griva, then Skutnik. After a few steps we're on the vast plateau called "Za Razorcem", where we come across a track coming from under Zavetišče pod Špičkom. Orientationally we approach Skutnik, a bit before it we turn left and over scree reach steep grass on the eastern slope of Veliki Jelenk. Very steep ascent (not recommended) we continue along the wall (left side of the picture) to the saddle. From here left over rocks to the top is just an easier walk.

Parking at the training center full. Hard to find a spot. Trainees waking up, we quickly pack gear. Where to? We decide on the way. When I see journeyman lounging on Pihavec ridge, somehow not velik nasmeh

We go to Veliki Jelenk, convince Milan cool

A bit worried looking at the ridge saddle. Try to convince myself it will go over there too. Descent not pleasant: dewy grass, black greasy soil and stones pulling out of grass.
Then pleasure climbing the next summit.
When standing on Zagorelec summit I see how steep that descent was. Over the saddle we climb to the other side. Pleasant fresh cool morning changes to heat and sun pounding overheated heads. At the hunting hut diligently concreting. Refresh ourselves, follows descent to Bavšica valley and new adventures ahead. cool

and we went, again not early, rather late and wondered at the full parking, read 3 cars, which for Bavšica is full😊, right. Strapped on too heavy backpack and already chasing altitude to planina Bukovec, where we sit a bit, then fly to Kanja saddle. Up to here we meet two hikers already. From saddle we descend a bit, over Luža and sun embraces us with its warm rays. Although after Prlet we skipped Šmihelovec, no problem, always leave something to have reason for more mežikanje

. Initial ascent to Zagorelec easy, but I already stare at the steep heights ahead?!! Descent from Zagorelec really juicy, well then, already two tricky spots right away, one narrow windy traverse and grass-rock mix in descent to mini saddle, where we ascend to Veliki Jelenk summit. Before we continued, voices came from Skutnik direction, then two figures nasmeh

. Quite surprised by today's visit and as it turned out later, the two guys chose counter direction. We two continue and start careful descent in grass luckily rich with tussocks. Soon at first "abseil", yay and already stand before upright Altar, around which bypass possible, but we two of course decide to "attack" it. Well, here really space for one crazy guy and on top, untying the rope which nicely knotted itself, we lingered a bit then...ufff eek

, when I had grass under feet it went, then step into void, always squeezes me a bit zadrega

, but on solid ground there was some shrieking and laughing😊. When co-enjoyer descends, says the peg moves a bit zmeden

, hmmm, push thought aside and continue. Follows easy approach to Skutnik...if only I knew last year. At summit we sign and since I had debt, this time had pen, but it was too big for summit log jar velik nasmeh

, well third time I don't know if I'll crawl up here again. Descent from Skutnik, well, unique experience where trentarski grasses don't "spare". To Špičica summit quickly, then decide for descent to dark shady side, where we "roped", as grasses with hint of black slippery soil, more than ideal slide for deep landing.
Descend to Vrh Osojnik, where first real snack and still bask in sun slowly setting. We pondered which descent shorter and decide for over Dolič. As now habit, our mandatory gear headlamp, as darkness caught us again in last part of path, where we almost stepped on a girl meditating in middle of logging road. eek

Yesss, Prlet traverse Zagorelec-V.Jelenk-Oltar-Skutnik and Špičica, success velik nasmeh

…when last year I looked at this side, traverse was science fiction to me, realized this weekend. Wild trentarski ends, no escape option, if any exists it's anything but easy. Day was perfect, cloudless, everything per plan and yes, of course I'll come again, maybe steepness mellows till next time, hahhaaa jezik

and yes... the traverse already shows trentarske teeth right away

...the world towards Bavšica is really special, wild and having the chance to traverse at least a bit of it is priceless for me nasmeh

Yesterday from Zapotok to Zagorelec and further traversing all the way to Špičica and Neimenovani vrh, where I finally find a decent descent towards planina Zapotok. The ridge is probably not visited very often, because the slings on the abseil stations are already quite shabby and I add new ones. On the top of Oltarček there's only one suspicious peg so I hammer another one and connect it with a new sling... the next one should replace it with a stronger one! This part of the ridge is really the cherry on the cake. Further to Špičica the grasses in the shade are still wet. In this solitary world you only meet some local snake, the grasses are sown with lush alpine flowers, it even smelled like chamomile. Even chamois avoid it. 😊 I think the most awkward descent is from Špičica. The black slings have expired.. so the ice axe helped the most.
All in all, this ridge is really something special in everything it offers and suitable only for mountaineers who are 100 percent confident in moving on pathless terrain. For abseil we had two thinner 30 m ropes and that's sufficient, less is not.
