Veliki Pelc

Yesterday turned out to be more than the right decision... already along the known path across Planina Bala or Valley of Butterflies, past the hunter's hut, straight on the marked path, where a little before the "saddle" Prevala we turned right, to the only natural possible passage towards the summit... the path is grassy at the beginning, then a short part turns into rough scree, where via a short gully we climb back to steep and unpleasant grasses, where in one traverse, a mix of slippery grass and rocks, we even belayed ourselves. The path to the summit is further undemanding, but still one needs to search for the best passages that lead to the ridge, where... breath stops and you start screamingvelik nasmeh, because the views yesterday were indescribably beautiful. The summit of Great Pelc really offered views, it was without a cloud and the peak at Klonica and Jalovec are so close, you could touch themjezik. Since our path was still long and clouds were starting to gather in the distance, we descended to the scree in the ascent direction, then renewed ascent to the left, approx. 200 m, to Vrh Osojnika. Followed descent via Dolič valley, on the hunter's path overgrown with tall "green salad", where walking is really unpleasant. Since we descended too much herevelik nasmeh we continued, instead of past pl. Bukovecmežikanje, straight down the streambed and lower joined the marked path and continued to the starting point in Bavšica. The path is very beautiful, interesting, again varied, demanding in terms of length and heat, with water possible on ascent at hunter's hut and on descent in streambed, and of course knowledge or lack thereof of the terrain. The day was really a bullseye...nasmeh

The easiest to Veliki Pelc is from Bala. From Bavšica follow the marked path through Bala valley to Preval. Already before Preval where the trail first turns sharply left, turn right on grasses to the grassy gully under the slope under Pelci, thus avoiding scree from Preval. The grass path is quite well trodden and followable. In the grassy gully catch the old trail, which vanishes higher. Continue straight up to scree under the wall. There direct left on grasses in gullies steeply up. Keep as far left as possible until you reach the overhanging block, where the trail leads left over narrow exposed ledge (rabbit ledge) left and up behind the edge over steep grass. At this point we repair or set new cairns, on the way back the passage is harder to find. Then more gently to the left to scree basin. Continue up to the next scree basin and at its lower edge turn left to grass/rock ridge, which leads to the ridge between Vel. and Sr. Pelc. Here you can also go right to the ridge leading to Sr. Pelc (harder, orientationally more complicated). Along it to the summit ridge. To Vel. Pelc you arrive from the left, after a few meters of easier scrambling. To Srednji Pelc in 10 min (easy). Orientation is demanding, grasses are quite steep but nothing extreme (grass tufts help), ledge crossing is demanding, steps are quite good and ledge is not friable. In moderate pace 5 hours to the summit, worth taking the time. The whole path is extremely scenic and at least until 9 a.m. in shade.

Very nicely and clearly described "complication" for one single peak.velik nasmeh For me much nicer and easier: Zadnja Trenta past Špič, take all Pelci plus Nizki vrh over Velika planina and Zapotok, finish with sausage.nasmeh
Good luck, Matic!

Nice description Matic, this variant I studied too to try once. Well Tonet variant sounds even better but from posts seems quite harder.

Yes from Trenta harder and longer ridge is climbing to II. grade. It's on list but list already long. Think anyone going described path from Bala won't be disappointed.

About the ridge traverse of the Pelci, here's one thread: http://www.hribi.net/trenutnerazmere.asp?slo=1&gorovjeid=1&id=5354&stran=1 We did it in 2015 and I have to say it's very demanding.

First choice for last Saturday was Zadnji Pelc, but with the announced start of the heatwave I decided for the shadier Bala valley - and consequently closer Veliki Pelc - where pleasant shade accompanied the ascent for three quarters of the way. At the hunting hut is the only spring on the path, its trickle so weak as if it's about to dry up..
From Prevala up the recognizable grassy gully, direction clear, trail appears occasionally.. At Prehodcu (under Zadnji Pelc) ran into a flock of sheep that, obviously expecting a treat (or "messenger" nasmeh), started besieging me, but I soon "escaped" to the boulders, meanwhile sorry I couldn't give them anything…
Path descriptions - both Habjan's and those of predecessors on Hribi.net - were a great help (thanks! nasmeh), soon found myself at Zajčja polica, which I crossed slowly and carefully, from there an hour's ascent to the top on less demanding terrain. En route also up to Srednji Pelc.
Not only from the top of Veliki Pelc, from the whole ascent from Bala beautiful views, from peaks of Loška stena offering themselves, sharp ridge of Pihavci, Bavški Grintavec and Bovška kotlina to neighboring Pelc above Klonicami and Mangart, on the ridge opens view also to highest Slovenian Julijci, Krnski, Kaninski, and Viševi groups - and nearby peaks above Zadnja Trenta…
Conditions good, heat "hit" only on descent to Bala, grasses still damp in the morning in Bala, but on harder spots under Pelci luckily dry.
Very nice and solitary corners…

When we went to those parts, it was always said that we were going to paradise.mežikanje
Such crowds as on Jalovec are not to be expected there due to the difficulty of the mountains. Of course, unless someone comes up with a new path.
Raubšic, follow the matters.nasmeh

To the descriptions of predecessors I add some info from my today's ascent on a slightly different variant - from Zadnja Trenta (Flori) via Krnica Srednjica to the notch between Veliki Skutnik and Veliki Pelc - first to Veliki Skutnik up and down, then to Veliki Pelc and on to Srednji Pelc - return on ascent path. More precise ascent details visible from attached photos. I join the opinion of many who walked the part to the entry into Krnica Srednjica - the path is overgrown and despite occasional marks hard to follow. On the section that steeply ascends under the north face of Vršac towards the area called Konj, it can be even dangerous on return, as you can quickly stray into very steep grassy / rocky slopes that end in precipitous gullies. So caution here, especially on possible return.
Veliki Pelc (left) and Veliki Skutnik (right) - taken from Srednji Pelc1
First part of the ascent from the notch to Veliki Pelc along a comfortable grassy ledge which requires only simple climbing - taken from Veliki Skutnik2
Second part of the ascent from the notch to Veliki Pelc along a comfortable grassy ledge (also simple climbing here) - taken from Veliki Skutnik3
Third part of the ascent from the notch to Veliki Pelc along a comfortable grassy ledge to the ridge and left to the summit (also simple climbing here) - taken from Veliki Skutnik4
Since the entry to the grassy ledge is harder to see from the notch itself, adding the first couple of meters of access - a couple of meters descent around the edge - taken from the notch5
Next few tens of meters to the grassy ledge - left to the wall6
Next few tens of meters to the grassy ledge - under the wall to the right7
