Thanks. Returning greetings. Nature has largely taken care of the nice photos. Best regards.

On Saturday we headed to Velo Polje from Rudno Polje. Below Studorski Preval on Jezerca snow starts, which sinks deeply. On Studorski Preval and further around Tosc it's bare ground, we encounter some snow patches but not on key spots. Groves around Velo Polje still protect quite some snow that sinks deeply.

During the hike I managed to photograph a huge herd of chamois, more chamois photos and path photos I posted on my website in the post: Herd of chamois, 5 friends and Velo Polje.

So it wouldn't just be the alpine pasture, early in the morning from Studorski Preval we popped up to Ablanca. After returning to the saddle we continued towards Velo Polje.
This time we witnessed cheese making. Interesting processes we captured with the camera.
Back we went via Čiprje. Over the stream from below Ablanca the little bridge is down, later a section of path that was washed away, then another section that threatens to go down the valley. On some parts more caution is needed.

In search of autumn-colored larches yesterday we went via Krstenica, Jezerski Stog and Jezerski Preval to the Velo Polje alpine pasture.
The early hour paid off, as before fog rolled in around the peaks, we enjoyed many beautiful autumn views.
Larches this year are a couple days late with that characteristic golden color, but already turning yellow.
Otherwise more on the photos. No problems on the path. Unfortunately with the weather forecast for coming days it will obviously be quite different.

Magnificent, to frame it! The Roman road is very visible, countless stars in the sky, the most beautiful winter constellation Orion and the largest star Sirius stand out!
Equally magnificent autumn-colored landscape!

Hut in Voje valley as starting point for mountains at 690m quite low. Lately we don't know how to walk normal paths but seek our variants and shortcuts, yesterday these proved longer paths.
Well, the goal was photographing autumn larches at Velo Polje. After more than three hours bushwhacking in forests above Voje valley we found ourselves on the main trail to Vodnik Hut. The hut was closing yesterday. We went on to Konjsko Sattel and ended up at Činkleman.
To Velo Polje alpine pasture we descended a less noticeable and quite eroded path, but we've been there before and no problems.
Velo Polje is surrounded all around by larches, which already adorn that golden color. Well, maybe some tree needs another day to "perfection".
Back we crossed over Razorje, then towards Voje we took the old abandoned path over Vrtača, which I advise against for those unfamiliar with terrain, as the path gets lost and can lead to steep cliffs in the head of Voje. In the lower part there's also quite a lot of fallen trees.
To Voje we arrived a bit below the waterfall.
For photography lovers now is definitely the right time to shoot larches.

Yesterday (Friday, Jan 24) to Planina pod Mišelj vrhom. Still in morning twilight the biathlon race wardens kindly let me pass to park at the parking lot a bit further from the junction of the cross path towards the Na Jezercu plain. Ice on the path is slowly melting, only some spots annoying. A bit below the plain snow starts on the path. The path further to Studorski Preval is well trodden, and also further to Ablanca and Tosc.

Continued on the cross path under Tosc, where the sun daily destroys tracks of numerous predecessors. Technically the about 4 km traverse is undemanding, but the path on quite steep slopes is snow-covered. Reliable walking with crampons on sometimes barely preserved tracks, where in case of fall hard to stop with ice axe, requires quite some concentration.

From Tosc onwards tracks much less (currently everyone goes to Tosc to climb East Gully), at the Na Zagon junction only from two or three hikers, and even those went further to Vodnik Hut. I went straight down and in the deeply snow-covered sparse forest somehow found passage past the hunting hut to Malo Polje. From there onwards past the drying lake continued to Planina pod Mišelj vrhom. On the pasture there are three brunarice huts and two ruins. Very old buildings built in characteristic local architecture: leaning on one side on wall, on the other on pillars ("kobile"). The lower space thus provides shelter for livestock.

Returned mostly same path, only from Malo Polje to Na Zagon junction via less steep and sunnier cross path from below Vodnik Hut to the right.

Conditions for walking mostly good, about stopping with ice axe on steep slope with hard snow I wouldn't talk, Jax already said his. But not everywhere the same. On descent to Malo Polje the path goes through shady, forested area. There wind deposited quite some snow that due to shade sun hasn't processed yet. Occasionally sinks deeply, once or twice to the waist. On return I followed the sunny sloped clearing, where there were more patches of firmly frozen snow. So conditions not ideal everywhere.

And one more: on the way to Studorski Preval I put on brand new micro crampons (weight 240g, spikes 1cm). Thin snow deposits on otherwise trodden path caused the micro crampons to slip annoyingly, they gripped only where snow was hard and not too steep. After a few steps on the other side of Studorski Preval I swiftly changed to real crampons.

From Pokljuka to Velo polje and further across the valley to Jezerski stog. Conditions ideal and autumnal. But from Sunday onwards it won't be anymore, it seems. Really, really beautiful spots...
Good luck..

What are the conditions like on Velo Polje? I'm thinking of going from Uskovnica along the renovated path via Planina Sp. Tosc, if there's not too much snow?

On Velo polje still lots of snow, attaching pictures from 14 days ago. But given temperatures and recent precipitation, the picture probably hasn't changed much.

jure 88; commenting from memory of similar conditions from past springs: potential trouble might be from avalanches crossing good 100 m from section above planina Trstje, from where you first meet the cable. 'Renovated path' means the part where you used to cross chasm over little bridge is permanently closed; but 'detour' is equipped with some aids. Next trouble might be last part of path before crossing torrent to planina Spodnji Tosc. Nothing impossible, but recommend ice axe. On slope to path crossing Tosc, snow I assume crusty. By location, expect most snow from planina to that path. Continuation I'd say without problems, don't know what you meant by 'Velo polje'. Vodnikov dom or planina? Advise at junction where Voje valley route joins, continue to Dolič, and if goal Vodnikov dom, access from planina Velo polje. Don't recommend crossing from junction to hut... P.S.: For access to Velo polje this period first dry route from Voje valley via Spodnje Vrtače. It was fading years ago; path not maintained, hard to pass due to fallen trees and harder to follow. If still interesting to you then on your own. Cheers

In search of glowing larches we headed to Velo polje this year too.
At Golden Waters the larch forest greeted us with the rising sun in colors as if everything were burning. Really wonderful sight.
Continued to Kačji rob and behind Viševnik to Srenjski preval. Then along the path under Mali Draški vrh to Studorski preval, then around Tosc to Vodnikov dom at Velo polje.
Warm, completely clear day, met just a couple of hikers.
Better hurry for those wanting to enjoy autumn-colored larches, as higher up they're already shedding.
