Parkeljc19. 05. 2011 15:15:10
Today I set off from "Šteng" towards High (Hen) Peak. The path is initially really steep, after about an hour of walking the steepness eases and it drags on quite slowly for a while. I had a printed route description with me, but still missed the path, I went along the "nicer" and more visible one instead, which seriously misled me and I reached the summit about an hour later and even that "around the back way". If I had seen the path branching off towards Vretov vrh along the ridge, I would have reached the summit very soon, but instead I crossed countless smaller gullies, even a rocky ledge where there's still a remnant of a fixed cable leading down from that ledge along a very steep and eroded gully looking towards the Hladnik stream valley. I ended up in a clearing where there's a newer log cabin, nearby below it two older ruins too, since no visible path I bushwhack straight up and end up on the saddle or ridge between Mojstrovica and High Hen Peak. Actually I did almost a full circle around HHP. Along the ridge I reach the summit in a few minutes. Great views all around. Since I was curious where I missed the path, I descended from the summit towards Vretov vrh, the path is nicely visible and quite steep, on the saddle below Vretov vrh it suddenly disappears, but I was orientationally sure that the path I ascended was nearby and it was, just no visible connection between them. After a few dozen meters off-trail I descend to the original path. This saved me a ton of time, as I no longer had to cross some steep torrent gullies and the rocky ledge with cable.
As some describe it, the path is really orientationally demanding, sometimes you see it, sometimes not, then again you do,.. Also true that it's slippery when wet, since most of the time you're traversing under the ridge or under cliffs.
Despite searching for the path a bit here and there and returning to the start, I took less than three hours to the summit. Hope I didn't scare anyone. velik nasmeh

A little after 9:00 I start hiking, leave the car 1.5km from the road before the landslide, there the steep hunting path also starts, there are junctions along the way but I stick to the ridge. I visit quite a few summits from Visoki Kurji vrh, Mojstrovica and other intermediate summits to Kresišče. There I descend towards Kepa and from the saddle back to the starting point via forest path. The road is in my opinion too dangerous to drive.

You have to find the right approach to Parkeljc, otherwise you really end up in the bushes, fallen scree, although there's always some visible hunting path that gets lost here and there a bit. I stuck more to the ridge, higher up went more left then right again, passed the spring, then crossed right and climbed up to Vetrov vrh which is in bushes, even all 4 directions up was possible. Then descended a bit and continued to the next summit Vršič, then followed the ridge to Visoki Kurji vrh from there to Mojstrovica and further along the ridge to before the sheer wall, where I spot a path on the left side. Climb up to Tišlerica and on to Kresišče from the east. Return was along the border ridge towards Kepa, up and down, eventually it brings me to the saddle, then descent along the southern path to the main forest path. Followed by about 5km forest path above Beli potok all the way to the hunting hut where I had the car.

Yesterday from Koča za Lepim vrhom to saddle Velika trata and across eastern slopes of Tišlerica to saddle between it and Mojstrovica. From there to the ridge and over Mojstrovica to Visoki Kurji vrh. Only at the summit does the sun warm us and we get the views. We return to Belca valley past Vretov vrh; due to wrong direction quite strenuous.

The road into Belca valley is still closed due to landslide. The sign is right at the beginning of the turnoff from the main road and so a kind of parking has formed there, which urgently needs at least a trash bin, because people throw trash around. I picked up a bag of it and one large cardboard, but couldn't take them away. Maybe someone who knows who to notify reads this and does something.

Ascent starts at Srednji vrh, more precisely at Vavčar farm. Pathless to the ridge, i.e. to the first summit Vavčarski Vršič. The path is solidly visible for quite a while, then disappears who knows where. We detour to the northern steep slopes, which are frozen in places. Warm sun invites us to the saddle in the ridge. From here the path, which goes more or less along the ridge, is well visible. At the junction we go left and soon we're "Pri zajli". The wire rope is new but not fully installed. Passage nevertheless no problem. On shady slopes we reach snow patches that accompany us to Planina Bašca. Path above the planina soon lost in steep grass, on the ridge we find it again. Turn right and along the white carpet to the summit. Descend back to saddle and continue on well visible path to saddle between Tišlerica and Grajščica. Here turn left and via path and later steep forest road to hunting hut za Lepim vrhom. Back to Srednji vrh along the road.

We start before the rock landslide on the road through Belce gorge. Steep up the hunting path to first junction. Continue on poorly visible path straight along the ridge. Along more or less visible path to watering place with trough. Continue slightly left and up towards Vretov vrh, which is excellent viewpoint. Then cross frozen, partly snowy NE slope of the summit to saddle, where path is visible again. At next saddle turn right to excellent viewpoint Vršič. Descend to saddle and along ridge path through greenery to the summit. Descend along SW ridge but soon turn right pathless to Planina Bašča. Continue left across passage "Pri zajli" to path junction. Turn left and continue to saddle below Fajferca. Then along more or less trodden path to below Vretov vrh. Continue right below summit and back to watering place. Down to road along already known paths. Without sense of orientation it's hard to find path continuation at some places.

Yesterday we wanted to go from Vavčar to High Peak, but the snow spiced up the ridge traversing so much that we didn't have enough in our pants. Instead, we fought our way up the lower path to Planina Bašca, and even there crossing the deepest gully wasn't entirely innocent.

On the first of November we headed again to High Peak from Vavčar. This time successfully, and we spiced the loop with Mojstrovica too. Given the weather, the report on (ideal) conditions is already irrelevant, but still:

Yesterday we planned to tackle Visoki Kurji vrh and hoped we could pull up from the main road junction into the heights along the newly built forest road. But no bread from that flour, as a barrier with a warning that passage is strictly prohibited due to demining stopped us right away. What now, we're 700m above sea level and 1128m below the goal and pose the fateful question? No way we have to grind out that much elevation? We scratch behind our ears a bit and quietly realize that there's no way but on foot, since wings haven't sprouted yet. Since we didn't float in on moonshine, we boldly bite into the unfriendly steep slope above us, crisscrossed with a multitude of more or less traceable paths and trails, for which you often don't know if they're animal-made or human-origin. Well-stocked with paper and electronic maps we quickly realize that these paths are drawn very differently. But past experiences have taught us well that paths recorded on maps often don't exist in nature or vice versa. As a top trail follower and grandmaster of getting lost off-trail, with navigation support in the thicket she manages to discern where human foot or animal cloven hoof once trod and break through to the summit (see our track). There we quickly realize there's not enough time to tackle Mojstrovica, Tišlerica and Grajščica. To spice up the tour a bit anyway, from the summit we take it along the ridge towards Vavčer (Rez) ridge, hoping that ridge paths are always adorned with some more or less renovated trail due to their allure and expansive views, but already after some 200m, as we hopelessly drown in the "churned sea" of lush dwarf pine, common sense hits us. Somewhat annoyed that we couldn't successfully execute the off-trail practice, we repeat back to the summit. On the grassy slopes above Planina Bašca we explore path fragments, along which we descend to the hunting (?) hut with logbook. Here the dilemma arises again, where and how to return to the car in the most elegant way, especially so we don't have to search in pitch dark. In the multitude of options the male part advocated directissima from Vavčer ridge (branch at 1550m) across Strmi graben and descent below Vretov vrh to start, the female part enthused over ridge variant via Raz to Vavčar farm above Gozd Martuljek, then along forest road back to start. Since male turns back, female turns around, we chose the feminine version. In dusk we reached the farm, greeted by dog barking - luckily behind electric fence -, in pitch dark with headlamps we marched another 5km, last half on asphalt, because definitively no more enthusiasm for night off-trail exploration. Despite all, with plenty of recorded highlights we enjoyed Ž&M.nasmeh

Yesterday to Vretov vrh via variant past the pond in the forest and traverse with gentle ascent to the ridge, where I turn right and reach the spring/well. The settled dry grasses during the tour were much more pleasant than the vibrant green you can soak up in these parts in summer. In higher areas the less sunny forest parts are still covered with snow.

On return I decided to scout Barakarjeva spica and descended along its ridge eastward, so on the left I had Vrsni graben and the Vrsic-Jurckova pec ridge. The ridge was quite steep and I descended quite far, once there must have been a trail, there were even some maintenance traces, but everything smelled quite abandoned. When I increasingly doubted if anything would come of it, the dubious trodden path suddenly turned into a concrete trail leading right off the ridge. But joy was short-lived, as after some dozens of meters behind the attractive comfortable bend around the cliff I found myself before a traverse cutting across the forest slope covered with thick foliage with strong incline. A slip could mean long toboggan... I didn't continue and the riddle remains if it was one of those trails that promise much at first and then disappear somewhere...

Turned around and went back the same way - first far up the sticky steepness along Barakarjeva spica ridge, then past the spring back to valley along the morning trail.

Ticks in these parts are huge in number and this year already active and we picked them off the dog after the tour. mrk pogled

Criminals return to the crime scene, says an old proverb. Well, we're not exactly criminals, but we love returning to unusual, adventurous, mysterious places, in short special and attractive ones. And after two years, on Saturday we tackle Visoki Kurji vrh again. Equipped with our own author track in Garmin, about a km from Belca off the road we confidently bite into the steep and after under three hours already sit on the sunny and for the season unusually hot summit. When we tie our souls with drink and food, from the ridge towards Mojstrovica we take steep grasses to the hunting hut on Pl. Bašca, then along trail towards Rez ridge (some call it Vavčarski greben). On the saddle some 230m from Rez summit (1412m) we spot a trail descending to valley. This would shorten our way, we think, no need to traverse whole ridge and past Vavčar farm and scary dogs back to car. Although no trace of such valley-leading trail in paper or virtual maps, despite quite dense scrub promising concrete steep, we decide to try luck. And after some 40m descent sadly don't find it. Path miserably ends in trodden paths, jumps, rocks and cliffs, so better return to ridge than risk wandering wilderness where no human foot has stepped. No embarrassment that GRS has to deal with unreasonable adventurers, or god forbid our "fame" sung in black chronicle.

Twisting like pretzels we avoided Vavčar dogs on shortcut and unlike tour two years ago when in pitch dark along cart track we trudged to road at Komunala Kranjska Gora plant, we take trail at 1000m height winding to Belca across Beli, Kladnikov and Strmi graben. At late hour, past five, still a bit worried if given this year's floods in Slovenia can cross all three gullies. Luck favors the brave, who risks profits, believe in yourself and follow your path, where there's will there's way, … and go. To Beli graben comfortable cart track, crossing easy, ahead decent trail easy to follow. Kladnikov graben passable too, before Strmi graben when trail reaches near 1200m it completely vanishes in steep grasses, but in maPZS, Mapy.cz and other digital maps precisely drawn enough to follow with navigation on. When we manage in dark to break through Strmi graben too, which due to wild terrain somewhat harder, stone falls from our hearts, since to car only some 700m distance, map-drawn trail should gently descend from 950m to valley, so night walking shouldn't be problematic. Then shock. In gully approx 180m from Strmi graben, rockfall wiped out, better erased ca. 30m of path, terrain config, scree on steep rock slabs and screes below path practically didn't allow safe crossing. Quickly clear what's awaiting. Stoically turn on headlamps, turn 180° and resigned to fate march in counter direction in dark. Add unexpected 5km march, 200m ascent and hero-less drag back to start on variant from two years ago. And for end some modest stats: 19km walked in 10.5hrs, 1685m ascent, for spicing household chores we picked exactly 36 ticks at home. Ah, for consolation at least three capital porcini cheered us along path and ended on plate today.

So to all adventurers, off-trail lovers, random hikers, explorers of useless world and others planning to step this path, we warmly advise against the intention. Despite all mishaps we sincerely enjoyed Ž&M nasmeh

If before Strmi graben you go on the path crossing it slightly upwards, you could join the ridge path that you two ascended in the morning.
The one drawn almost horizontally on maPZS is unknown to me, the upward one was non-existent in nature or here and there visible as a trodden path, but it didn't pose excessive problems. On this part (marked blue on the attached picture) old long-ago sawn trees helped me, their high stumps seemed like little men. nasmeh

Thanks for mentioning the abundance of ticks. I planned to go there tomorrow, but I'll wait a bit longer.

Plezalček, big thx for info. When the gully stopped us on Saturday and we couldn't go further, we were thinking about this variant to the ridge path too, but then besides 200m gain we'd have to deal with extra 240m ascent, which after nine hours of hiking and on top in pitch dark didn't appeal much. In dark too risky. Also not fully sure if this steep variant per maps is passable at all, never walked it. Now we know it's for experienced trailblazers, we'll do it next time in these nice wild parts. Then of course loaded with tick repellentsnasmeh

Suhy, I think you decided very wisely. Not suitable for dark searching, as ascent or descent direction (I went down here myself) not fully evident. Though variant seems logical i.e. along ridge, not quite. Need some feel and bit of luck finding best passages and as you said, blue marked part quite steep, not too bad though.
