Where to go with snowshoes

Tomorrow or on Tuesday we'd like to go on a snowshoe excursion. Since two haven't walked with snowshoes yet, I'm wondering if anyone knows some fun tour to excite beginners? Good luck and stay safe everyone!

1.Can go from Jelen dol road to Pl. Pungrat, but not under Košuta ridge. 2.To Velika Planina from Volovjek-Kranjski Rak. 3.To Krim from Strahomerja. 4.To Menina Planina. 5.Peč-Tromeja from Rateče 6.To Tamar or Krnica 7.Pokljuka plateaus 8.Soriška pl. with surroundings 9.Blegoš from Žetina 10.Ratitovec over Pl. Klom 11.To Valvazorjev dom 12.Vošca from Srednji vrh 13.Jeterbenk over Sv. Marjeta, Žlebe 14.To Goška ravan from Lipnica or Babji zob from Kupljenik 15.Galetovec from Boh. Bela 16.To Kot 17.From Srednja vas to Uskovnica 18.From Medvode to Dolga Njiva Of course considering avalanche conditions, although tours quite safe from avalanches. Tours require mainly in hardened snow just some prior fitness and preparation.

Thanks!!! For now thinking about Velika Planina or Soriška Planina (Lajnar, Slatnik). Anyone hiked these areas? Especially interested in Soriška Planina...

It will be an easier question: where we haven't been yet . From Soriška pl accessible Dravh, Lajnar, Slatnik, Kor above Karavanke, farthest and nicest to Možic. Ridge tour to Ratitovec over Kermant is long 3h one way. Nice to see these places and imprint original in memory, because already in summer there will gape clearing of polygon for Kobla ski area 2864 .

I think no problem to take off snowshoes sometimes and put them on again? Tours with snowshoes often require removing them (crossing streams, narrow deep gullies, fallen trees, etc ...) And also if you find snow holds well and walking without is even easier, you'll take them off anyway. Best http://www.petersfoto.si

Regarding the coefficient, I don't know what to tell you. I've never thought about it. Probably depends on altitude and snow type. Namely, even in fresh, deep and dry snow with snowshoes it goes just as slowly and is quite strenuous. Regards

Bismi, which part of Slovenia would you like to go to? Snowshoeing offers special pleasures, especially if the snow is untouched. Where you go isn't that important, more important is what the snow is like. The worst ordeal is snowshoeing on a trampled trail. For beginners I recommend the nearest snowy meadow or hill. For first impressions that will be enough. First steps on snowshoes can be anything but exciting. After my first few-hour snowshoe experience I had only one wish, to take them back to the store. Snowshoeing requires a lot of fitness and leg strength. In very deep and soft snow you sink even with snowshoes and it requires extra strength to pull the snow-laden snowshoes out of the sunk footsteps. Once you get used to them, walking with them is pure pleasure. I don't go anywhere without them anymore and if possible, I put them on. Of course at the start of the trail I'm often in a dilemma - with or without? Especially if there's little snow or it doesn't sink too much. In the end it turns out that walking with snowshoes is mostly more comfortable and also faster. So I agree with MajaO. With snowshoes it usually goes faster. I compared this last time when my husband and I went the same trail, he with snowshoes on his backpack, me with snowshoes on my feet. I walked faster, easier and arrived at the goal much less tired. But it's true that snowshoes aren't suitable for all terrains, especially steep ascents and crossing steep slopes. But they work great in conditions where snow changes from step to step (from ice to sinking to knees), the most ideal for snowshoeing is wind-packed snow that doesn't hold human weight without snowshoes, but with them you don't sink. Walking with snowshoes on soft untouched whiteness gets a special rhythm, when it feels like the world is moving in a slow-motion film.

Snowshoes are for walking on untouched snow, not on holes. When the skiers' track is already sufficiently hardened and frozen and doesn't sink, with snowshoes due to narrow track you walk by keeping one foot on the track, the other next to it in full snow. This way you avoid getting tangled between snowshoes with too narrow walking. On steep terrain especially watch the thicker crust that under load likes to break and in slip acts like ice, so with snowshoes here we are completely powerless regarding stopping!. On long tours with snowshoes walk as much as possible in even medium tempo but constant, because stopping intermittently consumes more energy.

On Saturday 16.2. I went for the first time with snowshoes from Rudno polje to Planina Zajamniki. Wonderful experience! Strenuous, but worth every drop of sweat. As MajaO already said, Pokljuka plateaus are surely a good choice. Regards Matic

We finally decided for Velika Planina and really enjoyed it. Given the not too encouraging weather forecast we decided not to drive far, just to go into the snow. I absolutely agree that for starters, to excite a person, a nearby hill soon after snowfall is enough, for me it was love at first sight. Friends liked it too, we spent a great winter day, which I can conclude only with my sister's words, who dreamed of spring already in January: "If it's so great, winter can linger a bit longer!"

How much snow would there be now or will there be (after snowfall) on Velika Planina? I'm thinking about a snowshoe trip.
