Winter hiking for children

Hello, this year we as a family focused a bit more on mid-mountains and lower high-mountains and since May did about 20 hikes (from Krim, Nanos, Snežnik, to Kladivo, Begunjščica, Vajnež) with ascents averaging between 1000 and 1500m, for pleasant full-day trips. Now we want to continue also with some winter hike, maybe to Golake or some peak on Nanos, to Dom na Kofcah or Dom na Blegošu. There's a lot written about proper equipment for such hikes, but still almost no info on what footwear is suitable for children, and where to get it. Crampons for snow and icy paths are available from size 36 up. Children's crampons (size 30) aren't found in stores. Maybe smaller 4-point crampons are suitable for kids, since not limited by length? Is that safe or even necessary? Are there any special children's hiking boots mainly for snowy conditions? Thanks for any advice. Thanks and best regards

Does anyone have experience with hiking gear from Karimor? Sales point at Sports Direct. Some say it's crap, some praise it. Thanks for advice

I have had a lined warm fleece with zipper and 2 pockets-also zippers for at least 5 years. Countless washes, worn "every day", and in hills, skiing... Slightly faded; seams, zippers, materials still v.g.

Karahawk! In stores with hiking gear you won't get "junk", cuz they don't have it there. You can get it in bookstore, or watch it in cinema. Check definition of word "šund" in SSKJ (Slovenian Dictionary) Best regards.

Karahawk! When buying, keep only one thought in mind. And that is: All clothes and all gear I buy for MY CHILDREN and MYSELF, for MY and THEIR SAFETY. Every cent you save at the expense of quality can be very costly. Follow "primoza"'s instructions, as he has lots of knowledge and even more experience. Find his "posts" and check the family's gear in the pics too.

Haha, then it's junk. Anyway, I agree with you, I just wanted users' opinions on this brand, whoever uses it. Luckily, gear has never failed me mid-hike because I pay attention to quality. With good gear, hiking can be a pleasure in any weather. Firm step!

I checked the gear and it's quite similar to mine, so my safety is probably not at risk.

What would winter ascent on Blegoš be like, anyone know? Been up only 1 time, that in spring. Thanks for answer.

Winter ascent to Blegoš would be full simple. Or it would be damn tough. Often it could be something in between. If there's knee-deep fresh snow, it's exhausting when/if you're breaking trail fresh. When snow is settled, then some inversion comes and a bit of fog and then hard frost presses, it's icy and hard and without crampons and ice axe you can't do anything. It can be quite well trodden, trampled, but wind blows like hell and again not the most pleasant. It can also have had a nice track recently, but those who fly down the uphill track instead of beside it have messed it up. Or some ski tourer does a couple of christiania turns right across the track . . . Usually it's like you read someone's report in the evening and when you go there next day, conditions are completely different. And when you go up several times (not necessarily always to Blegoš) at different times of day, you realize morning conditions differ from midday and midday from evening. Yeah, nothing to it, mountaineering is tough. But with years you get used to everything (if you don't hit a mine before).

If you're unsure where to go for a family hiking trip depending on the season, you can join us. Dear hikers, in PD REGA LOG in 2013 we are starting FAMILY HIKING TRIPS. Every month, besides the regular trips, we will organize trips dedicated to families. We live in a time that mercilessly demands a fast pace and rush from us, so we all too often don't take proper time for joint activities in the family. In PD REGA LOG we have therefore set ourselves the goal to attract as many families as possible, parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, to a joint activity that will unite all family members – hiking. Adults will take time to "unplug" from work obligations, we will pull children away from the TV and computers, while also providing exercise in the fresh air, discovering something new and learning something too. We have prepared eleven interesting trips (trip plan attached), suitable for participants from the age of five onwards. We will enrich the trips with additional activities (workshops, museum visits, events,…), so our members will set out on new paths with even greater joy. All individuals who wish to join us are also welcome. On the trips, our REGA and MOUNTAIN GNOME will accompany us, who will surprise the children at the highest points of the trips with gifts. WELCOME TO PD REGA TRIPS! (more about us and our activities can be seen on the website http://www.pd-rega.si)
