Please, experienced mountaineers, recommend a winter ascent to me on some peak in the Karawanks which is technically not too difficult, of course using complete winter gear. I did a winter ascent on Mala Mojstrovka, so I would repeat something in that style, but in the Karawanks. Thank you very much!

In the Karavanks maybe Stol from Valvasorjev dom (1000 m ascent), or Begunjščica or Vrtača from Ljubelj (1100 m). Otherwise a very easy tour from Pokljuka to Brdo or Debelo peč, even easier is Viševnik (these three are in the Julians). All these hills are a bit over 2000 m. LP

No, no, on these pics there was 4 meters of snow. They are this year's, January-March.

michael66, thank you very much for the suggestions. Honestly, Viševnik looks great to me from the pictures! Nice greetings.

In winter, on the approaches, mainly stick to ridge paths. So Stol in new snow from Valvasorjev dom is not recommended. Safe are mainly Veliki Vrh, Begunjščica from Robleka, Srednji vrh above Zelenica, Stol along the ridge from Vajnež (also avalanches), Trupejevo poldne from L.K. left to the ridge, Struška, Klek, Tromeja.

Need to follow forecasts of avalanche danger levels, and go on tours early in the morning. In the afternoon hours, you should already be in the valley. For Begunjščica from Robleka, judging by last year's experiences, I wouldn't say it's really safe. As far as I know, the winter approach is Šentanski plaz. Golica e.g. has a winter path (safe). Climb smart.. Good luck, heinz!

Could someone list some winter tours in Kamnik hills suitable for a beginner?

I wouldn't want to bore you, but just in case, you need winter gear for all four above trips that we know how to use - if responsible, we carry it everywhere in high mountains in winter. Crampons for icy terrain. If we have crampons and fall, we stop with ice axe not poles - so ice axe goes with crampons. Easier peaks in Kamniks in winter also Lepenatka, Velika Planina from Stahovica, Dleskovec from Planinska or Raven etc. regards.

Via Šentanski plaz most skiers go up, because of nice descent. Nobody realizes that due to NE aspect and windpacked snow and big avalanches at ridge top, quite risky. Golica even on "winter" path, below in gully no guarantee. Locals hit big avalanches there reaching into forest and above hut sometimes not too safe. Regards

So, if I understood correctly, the greatest safety is: use of winter gear - ice axe, crampons, rope if possible, proper information on the avalanche danger level and weather conditions on the day of hiking? Did I forget something? Inform someone about the route?

Maybe it would be best to attend some course on safe walking or movement in winter conditions. I studied theory to zero, but still decided to go on such a course on 19. and 20.12.2009. Theory without practice in critical situations won't be enough.

Hi, Šerpa, I agree with you, but time really isn't on my side regarding school; I rely on a little knowledge from tours on Grossglockner and Velebit. Regards
