Description of mountain:
Mountain Kriváň is the first dominant peak of High Tatras, looking from the west, and is part of Tatra National Park. Above Liptov valley it is rising with its characteristic pyramidal peak.
Kriváň is with 2.494 meters of altitude one of the highest peaks in Slovakia and in Carpathians. From the second half of the 19th century, this mountain is the symbol of Slovak national consciousness. In the year 1840 to the Hungarian emperor loyal monarchists on the top of Kriváň erected an obelisk, which supposed to be in the memory of the ascent of King of Saxony Friedrich August II. the same year. This obelisk was few years later destroyed by Slovak patriots during one of "popular marches" - some kind of Slovak national pilgrimage. The first such march was on 16th August 1841, in which Ľudovít Štúr and Michal Hodža participated. In the year of the memorandum 1861 Štefan Marko Daxner organized the largest march to Kriváň. Since the year 1955 those walks on Kriváň are dedicated to Slovak national uprising 1944.
From 1960 to 1990 the image of this peak was part of the national coat of arms of Czechoslovakia. Today it is depicted on the back side of Slovak coins for one, two and five cents. Because of its very surprising shape, the mountain is the topic of various Slovak myths and legends.
