Access to starting point:
A) Via the border crossing Korensko sedlo we drive into Austria and then continue right towards Beljak / Villach. Still before we cross the river Zilja / Gail, we leave the road which leads towards Beljak and continue driving right in the direction of Baško jezero / Faaker See. Further, we drive towards the mentioned lake, and in the settlement Bekštanj / Finkenstein we turn right towards Škocjan / Kanzianiberg and Stari Grad / Altfinkenstein. Further, we drive on local roads, which at the crossroads we follow in the direction of the hotel Baumgartnerhof. We park on the parking lot near the mentioned hotel.
B) Through the Karawanks Tunnel we drive to Austria and leave the highway at the first exit. At the settlement Kot / Winkl we turn right and continue driving towards Baško jezero / Faaker See. At the end of the settlement Loče / Latschach we turn left in the direction of the hotel Baumgartnerhof. We park on the parking lot near the mentioned hotel.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue on stairs following the signs »Mallestiger Mittagskogel«, »zum Wasserfall«. Already after a few meters we are at a junction where we continue left following the signs Rotschitza Klettersteig. The path first crosses meadows, descends a few meters, then turns right and brings us into the forest. Further on, the path joins a cart track along which we ascend for quite some time. During the ascent on the cart track we always follow the signs Rotschitza Klettersteig. At the hunting observatory the cart track ends and we continue on a footpath that soon brings us to the waterfall by the stream, where the climbing part of the path starts.
Before entering the climbing part of the path, we equip ourselves with a helmet and self-belay set.
Below the waterfall we cross the stream and begin to ascend alongside the waterfall upwards with the help of bolts and steel cable. Above the waterfall we continue along the left side of the stream and the hardest part of the path follows (difficulty B/C), where with the help of bolts we ascend to the bridge (steel cable across the stream). Along the steel cable we cross the stream to the other side and then continue ascending alongside the stream. Further on, we cross the stream two more times with the help of steel cables. In the last part the climbing path brings us to another smaller waterfall above which the path becomes less demanding. We walk alongside the stream for some time, then continue right and the path through the forest soon brings us to a junction where we join the easier path.
At the junction we continue left and ascend up the right side of the valley. The path then brings us to a vantage point where there are also benches and a cross. From the vantage point, where there is a nice view of some smaller waterfalls, we continue right and ascend through the forest. A zigzag ascent follows alongside a smaller stream at the edge of the forest. Due to the forest, views of the surrounding peaks open up only rarely. Higher up the path becomes slightly less steep and brings us to the hut Mitzl Moitzl Hütte.
At the hut we continue slightly left and begin to ascend through larch forest. Higher the path turns slightly right and a short ascent to the junction on the border ridge follows.
On the ridge we continue left following the signs »Schwarzkogel 1h«. Initially we still ascend through sparse forest, higher it is replaced by dwarf pines and increasingly beautiful views begin to open up, especially on the Julian Alps. In the last part the path brings us to grassy slopes and a short ascent to the summit follows.
