Access to starting point:
Highway A2 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee - Graz we leave at the Packsattel exit (from the direction of Graz we take the Mooskirchen exit), and then we follow the road towards the town of Köflach and further towards Judenburg and the Gaberl ski slope. Still in the town of Köflach, we turn slightly left into the settlement of Maria Lankowitz, from where we then follow the signs for the cottage Altes Almhaus, where we park on a gravel parking lot.
Path description:
On the northwestern side of the parking lot, we notice signs for Gaberl, Sattelhaus, and Gleinalm, which direct us onto a cart track that leads into the forest and brings us past an archery range, where we begin descending through the forest; leaving the marked path is prohibited. Lower down, we reach a drivable road, which we cross to the left (the Via Alpina continues along the road), and a little further down, we turn right and continue along a gentle cart track that offers some views for a while. Next, there is some traversing, then the cart track splits, and we choose the slightly right cart track that leads toward the Gaberl ski slope. This is followed by an easy diagonal ascent, and a few minutes later, we cross a poorer road that leads to nearby holiday cottages. After some more easy walking, we reach a larger parking lot, across which we continue to the main road, which we carefully cross, and we are already at the Gaberlhaus mountain hut.
