Bašelj - Bašeljski vrh (via hospital Košuta)

Access to starting point:
A) From the Ljubljana–Jesenice motorway, take the Kranj-East exit, then continue driving towards Jezersko. When we arrive in Preddvor, leave the main road and continue driving left towards the centre of the mentioned settlement; from there follow the signs for the Bašelj settlement. When we arrive in Bašelj, at the spot where the main road makes a long left turn, leave it and continue driving straight in the direction of Gamsova pot. Continue driving on the narrow asphalt road that leads us between the houses and along the Belica stream. Park on the parking lot by the Bašelj Tourist Association.
B) From the Jesenice–Ljubljana motorway, take the Kranj-West exit and at the first junction continue left. Then drive through the underpass under the motorway, arriving at a roundabout from which continue driving towards Golnik. The route continues through the settlement of Mlaka pri Kranju, and at the end of the settlement continue right towards the Srakovlje settlement. This is followed by driving through Srakovlje, Spodnja Bela, Srednja Bela, Zgornja Bela (in Zgornja Bela we join the road from Preddvor) to Bašelj, where the main road makes a long left turn; leave it and continue driving straight in the direction of Gamsova pot. Continue driving on the narrow asphalt road that leads us between the houses and along the Belica stream. Park on the parking lot by the Bašelj Tourist Association.

Path description:
From the starting point at the log cabin of the Bašelj Tourist Association, continue on the forest road closed to public traffic, which leads us along the Belica stream. Initially we walk past the football and basketball courts, then we reach the first junction of Gamsova pot, where to the left branches the path to the church of sv. Lovrenc, Dom pod sv. Lovrencem; it is also possible to continue towards Storžič, Krničarjeva koča on the Javornik pasture, Mali and Veliki Poljani...
From this junction, continue the ascent on the macadam road, which moderately ascends through the forest or partly through bushes. After a few minutes, we reach the turning point of the forest road, where the footpath to Kališče continues right across the stream, and slightly to the left continues Gamsova pot, leading to Gradišče and further to sv. Lovrenc, as well as the path to Kališče via the forest road, Kališče past the Košuta hospital, and Kališče along the Kisovec ridge. Continue on the wide cart track ascending towards the nearby water intake. Before the intake, leave the wide cart track and again continue slightly left on the path where Gamsova pot continues. Next, ascend for a few minutes on a steeper cart track; when it ends, continue right on a less distinct but relatively well-trodden path ascending through the forest. Higher up, the trail partly disappears in places; follow the otherwise rare yellow-white blazes marking Gamsova pot. Ascend through the forest for a few minutes, then at a bend reach another forest road, which we follow to the right (left to Laško). Walk a few dozen metres on the macadam road and reach the next junction, where to the left branches the path to sv. Lovrenc, and a few steps further to the right to the Gradišče summit. Continue on the road for another 10 minutes or so, then reach a small parking lot and a few steps further the turning point at the end of the road.
From the end of the road, continue left on the cart track towards Kališče and Storžič. The cart track then moderately ascends along the bed of the Belica stream and after about 10 minutes splits into two parts. Continue on the left cart track, which ends after just a few metres. Here, leave the vicinity of the streambed and continue slightly left on the path that steeply ascends through the forest. The steepness soon eases, and the path brings us to the partisan hospital Košuta.
Behind the hospital, cross two successive torrents, then the path becomes steeper again. The path ahead continues through the forest, crossing a steeper slope where more caution is needed when wet. Above the steep section, reach the side ridge of Kališče, where an unmarked path from Bašelj joins from the right.
Here continue left and continue the ascent on the still steep path through gradually thinning forest. After a bench and some views of nearby Storžič, the path turns right and returns to dense forest. A less steep path follows, quickly taking us to the first hut on Spodnje Kališče. Behind the hut, the forest ends, then on pleasant grassy terrain in a few minutes reach the central part of the pasture, where we join the usual path from Mače.
From Spodnje Kališče, continue slightly left towards Dom na Kališču, from where a few minutes of walking through the forest follow, then arrive at a fine viewpoint from which opens a nice view towards nearby Dom na Kališču, Mali Grintovec, the Lanež ridge, Krvavec... From the viewpoint, only a short ascent remains, and we are at Dom na Kališču.
Behind Dom na Kališču, notice the mountaineering signpost with numerous continuation options. Continue on the gentle and panoramic ridge path towards Storžič, Bašeljski vrh..., which heads north. After a few minutes of easy walking with fine views reaching to the Julian Alps, reach a junction where continue right (straight to Storžič) towards Bašeljski vrh. The path ahead steeply ascends through a belt of dwarf pines and, with fine views of neighbouring Mali Grintovec, brings us to the dwarf pine-covered ridge of Bašeljski vrh, where in the next few minutes we reach the next well-marked junction. At the junction, the path to Mali Grintovec and Srednji vrh branches right; we continue straight ahead and, with a view of Storžič, continue the ascent. The path, running along and beside the dwarf pine-covered ridge, a little below the summit also joins the path from Jekarica and Bašeljski preval. Here continue right along the slightly narrower ridge, and in one minute of further walking reach Bašeljski vrh, from which opens a fine view towards the mountains above Jezersko, extending to Košuta, Obir and the Lavanttal Alps in Austria.
