Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora over the border crossing Rateče we drive towards Trbiž / Tarvisio. Soon after the border crossing, the road in the direction of lakes Belopeška jezera / Laghi di Fusine branches off to the left, which in a moderate ascent we then follow to a large parking lot at the lake Zgornje Mangartsko (Belopeško) jezero.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue on the left side of the inn in the direction of the mountain hut Zacchi. The path at first runs on the forest road which we leave after few minutes, because blazes point us to left on a wide cart track. Cart track on which we walk little higher changes into ascending footpath. Relatively wide and well-marked path then in a moderate ascent through the forest in good hour of walking from the starting point brings us to the mountain hut Zacchi (to here possible also on the forest road).
At the mountain hut, we follow the signs »Ponza di Mezzo, Ponza Grande«. The path from the mountain hut is then for some time ascending through dwarf pines below the steep slopes of Ponce slightly to the right and soon brings us to first steel cables on the path. Here the path turns a little to the left and then few times quite steeply ascends by the steel cable. When we get very close to the walls below Visoka Ponca, the path turns to the right and crosses wide gully. Next follows a shorter ascent a little right from the gully, which brings us to a crossing. Direct very demanding climbing path (ferrata) on Visoka Ponca branches off to the left, and we go on the path right, which leads towards Srednja Ponca and on Visoka Ponca on a little easier path. The path from a crossing at first in a gentle ascent crosses slopes to the right, and then turns to the left and it ascends on a steep grassy slope. Grassy slope is soon replaced by rocks and after a shorter ascent, we are again at the crossing. This time we go left towards Visoka Ponca, right leads the path on Srednja Ponca and ahead in Tamar. After that, the path crosses a slope to the left and it brings us to the notch Planiška škrbina (2156 meters), where for the first time a view opens up on the Slovenian side into a valley Tamar. On the notch path turns to the left and steeply ascends by the steel cable on a narrow ridge. The path then avoids the ridge on the south side and at first in a gentle ascent crosses a steep slope towards the northeast, and then turns slightly to the left and steeply ascends on a rocky slope towards the summit. In the last part towards the summit, the path is also slightly crumbly.
