Access to starting point:
Access from Gorenjska: Through the Rateče border crossing we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio, where we head onto the highway in the direction of Vidma / Udine. We leave the highway at the Tolmezzo exit and follow the road to the mentioned settlement. From Tolmezzo we continue in the direction of the settlement Ampezzo and mountain pass Passo della Mauria. The road then starts descending and brings us into the Cadore valley, where we continue right (left Belluno and Cortina d'Ampezzo) in the direction of the settlement Auronzo. After a few additional km of driving, we come to the next larger junction, where we go right in the direction of the settlement Misurina (left mountain pass Tre Croci). From here we descend the road to a larger junction (right Dobbiaco and Austria, left Cortina d'Ampezzo). A little before the mentioned junction we will notice on the left side of the road a larger parking lot where we park.
From the Primorska side: We drive on the highway which leads through the Sežana border crossing to Trst / Trieste. Further we drive on the Italian highway in the direction of Padova, but only to the highway junction, where we continue in the direction of Veneto and Belluno. Near Belluno the highway ends, and we continue in the direction of Cortina d'Ampezzo and Auronzo. When the road brings us into the Cadore valley we will come to a larger junction, where the road to Cortina d'Ampezzo goes left, and to Auronzo right. Here we continue right towards Auronzo. Further, we follow the above description.
Path description:
From the parking lot, we continue approximately 200 meters on the main road in the direction towards Misurina. Two macadam roads will then branch off to the right. We head onto the second road following the signs for Cortina.
For some time we then walk on the mentioned road, which is popular among cyclists. Two narrower roads will also join us from the right, and then the road soon brings us to a wooden fence, where a cart track branches off to the left. Along the cart track we will also notice some old blazes on the trees.
We take the mentioned cart track, on which we then ascend through the forest. The cart track then brings us near the riverbed of a torrent, where it turns into a footpath. Further on, we walk along the riverbed of the torrent all the time, which is usually without water in the lower part. From the path, which runs through the valley named Val Della Fontana di Sigismondo, nice views open up on the nearby peaks above us and on the mountain Croda Rossa to the northwest.
Higher, the path along the riverbed becomes somewhat less visible, so we must be quite attentive to notice the scree where our path turns left upwards from the riverbed (at an altitude of approximately 1800 m).
After the ascent over the scree, the path turns left again and then ascends diagonally towards the northeast. The path here runs mostly along dwarf pines, occasionally crossing some screes as well. Such a path then brings us to the military tunnel on the south side of the peak Monte Fumo.
From here on, the path becomes more demanding and, due to a smaller rockfall, also quite dangerous and difficult to pass. After crossing the rockfall, the path brings us to a ledge along which we continue left, bringing us to the northern side of the mountain. Here we will soon reach a poorly visible junction, where the northern path also joins from the left side.
At the junction we continue right upwards and first ascend somewhat more steeply, then a somewhat gentler path along dwarf pines follows to the panoramic summit.
