Between Trenta and Bovec, at the village of Soča, a road branches off to Lepena. We follow this fully asphalted road to the parking lot at the Dom v Lepeni mountain hut.
Path description:
From the Dom dr. Klementa Juga mountain hut in Lepena, we head onto the path towards the Dom pri Krnskih jezerih mountain hut, Gomiščkovo zavetišče na Krnu and Dom na Komni. Already right from the parking lot, the path enters the forest, through which it ascends along a wide mulattiera. Along the mulattiera we mostly ascend moderately (the steep variant of the ascent in the lower part has not been in use for some time) through the forest, with only occasional glimpses towards the valley and surrounding mountains. During the ascent we cross the cargo cableway route several times, crossing of which is forbidden during its operation. After about an hour and a half of walking, the path flattens and shortly afterwards brings us to the upper station of the cargo cableway.
From here, the path leads along the edge of a smaller valley, quickly bringing us to the spot where every year in April they measure the snow depth. A short descent follows, then we arrive at a marked junction where the path to Velika Baba branches off to the left.
At the junction we continue straight along the wide path, which quickly brings us to the next junction. This time we turn left downhill onto the footpath, which brings us to the Dom pri Krnskih jezerih mountain hut in a few minutes (if we continue straight, we bypass the mountain hut).
From the mountain hut we continue straight towards Krn and Krnsko Lake along a gentle path, to which soon joins the path that bypasses the mountain hut. We continue past the shepherd's hut, after which we reach the next junction, where we again continue towards Krn (left to Bogatin, Mali Šmohor and Dom na Komni).
The gentle path then brings us, after a few more minutes, to the pearl of the Krn mountain range. Ahead of us we spot Krnsko Lake and inviting meadows beside it for resting. The marked path then leads us along the left side of the lake at the foot of the Mali Šmohor scree. On the other side of the lake, the path turns slightly left and ascends a somewhat steeper slope, where somewhat higher the unmarked (upper) path joins us, which traverses the scree slopes above Krnsko Lake in a traverse ascent (this path is somewhat shorter but exposed to falling rocks). The path then turns somewhat right and brings us to extensive torrential debris cones, which end on the Planina na Polju.
We continue along the gentle path running across the planina, and on the right side we will notice the hunting hut. We then leave the marked path and head right into pathless terrain. We keep to the gentle grassy terrain left of the hut and head towards the small valley leading towards the saddle Čez Potoče. At the end of the planina, before the path starts ascending again, we will also notice some cairns.
When we begin ascending, the track becomes visible again and orientation is not overly demanding. The path continues ascending up the valley along mostly grassy terrain. We follow such a path all the way to the saddle Čez Potoče, where we briefly get a view towards the north as well.
At the saddle we leave the well-trodden track and head right into pathless terrain. In the initial section we ascend right along the ridge on the right side. The slope here is grassy and occasionally quite steep, so some caution is needed. Especially when wet, the slopes can be dangerous for slipping. For a short time we move away from the ridge somewhat further to the right, then follows the ascent back towards the ridge. Soon we reach the forepeak, on which there are also some remains from World War I. On the eastern side of the forepeak there are also some military trenches.
From the forepeak we gently descend the still mostly grassy slope, which in this section is slightly less steep. Then follows another ascent along the right side of the ridge to the summit of Vogel, from which we get a view towards the summit of Veliki Lemež, located further along the ridge. From the path we have meanwhile had a nice view towards Krn and the Soča Valley for some time.
We descend along the ascent path.
On the way: Dom pri Krnskih jezerih mountain hut (1385m), The lake Krnsko jezero (1391m), Planina na Polju (1530m), Čez Potoče (1850m)
Trip can be extended to: Veliki Lemež
