Access to starting point:
From Kranjska Gora on the road which leads over the mountain pass Vršič we drive towards Bovec or vice versa. Between the 22nd and 23rd hairpin turns of the Vršič road we will get to the parking lot below the mountain hut Erjavčeva koča, where we park.
Route description:
From the parking lot at the mountain hut Erjavčeva koča we continue towards the south in the direction of the mountain hut Poštarski dom na Vršiču. The path from a meadow quickly passes into thin, mostly larch forest, where it first crosses slopes, then also a bigger torrent gully. After the gully the path starts ascending, and from our path soon left downwards an unmarked footpath branches off, which leads towards the mountain hut Tonkina koča na Vršiču (footpath lower joins the old road). Next follows a little more walking on a mountain path, and then we get to an old road which we at first cross on a marked shortcut, and then we continue the ascent along it. Further, beautiful views open up more often on surrounding mountains and walls. On one of the zig-zags the path continues straight ahead towards Prisojnik (path through the window Prednje Prisojnikovo okno), and then in a few more zig-zags we reach the plain before the mountain hut Poštarski dom na Vršiču. From here follows only a short walk and the path brings us to the mountain hut Poštarski dom.
At the mountain hut Poštarski dom on Vršič we step on a wider macadam road, on which we start lightly descending towards the mountain pass Vršič. With nice views on the mountain wall of Prisojnik and Ajdovska maiden, the road slowly turns to the right, then quickly brings us to a marked junction, where we continue left in the direction of Prisojnik and Razor (slightly right or further on the road we get to mountain pass Vršič).
We continue on a well-beaten mountain path, which for some time continues on a gentle and panoramic ridge. After a few minutes, the path starts ascending steeper through a thinner belt of dwarf pines, then it flattens and brings us right below the top of grassy Sovna glava. Here we leave the marked path and after a few steps of pathless terrain we ascend to the panoramic and spacious peak.

Discussion about the trip Erjavčeva koča na Vršiču - Sovna glava (on old road)

Short, easy but very nice trip. Especially colorful in autumn when passing numerous larches. Once you discover this old path you can't believe you didn't know about it for so long and want to repeat it soon. Maybe worth considering extending it by starting on this old path at its beginning at Mihov dom.
