Access to starting point:
A) We leave the Gorenjska highway at the Kranj west exit, and then we follow the signs for Golnik and Križe. A little after the settlement Senično, a steep road branches off to the right upwards, which leads towards Zgornje Vetrno and Gozd. Soon after the village Zgornje Vetrno, we come to a marked parking lot, which is situated on the left side of the road (starting point for the steep path to Kriška gora), but we continue driving on the ascending road, which soon brings us to the shelter Zavetišče v Gozdu. We can park on one of the two large parking lots by the mentioned shelter, or drive a good 100 m further to the parking lot by the church.
B) From the road Naklo - Tržič, in the settlement Retnje, we turn onto the road in the direction of Križe and Golnik. In Križe, at the stop sign turn right towards Golnik, but we continue on the main road to the junction, where a steep road branches off sharply to the left, which leads towards Zgornje Vetrno and Gozd.
Route description:
From the parking lot, we first walk to the nearby church, then we come to the marked junction, where the path from Golnik joins us from the right. We continue slightly to the left and continue the ascent on the road, which past two successive NOB monuments brings us above the village, where the road changes into a wide but steep cart track. After a short ascent, the cart track splits into two parts, and we continue on the left in the direction of Koča na Kriški gori (right Tolsti vrh). The cart track then past the water supply structure and holiday cottage passes into the forest, where it continues in a moderate ascent.
A little further on, the signs for Kriška gora direct us to the right (straight unmarked path to Kriška gora) onto a somewhat rougher cart track, which higher up changes into a relatively steep path. Further, we ascend on a nicely arranged path, along which we notice numerous benches and beside them the names of the benches. Higher up, the path brings us to a pasture fence and a little higher turns to the left, where it then ascends diagonally. After a few minutes of diagonal ascent, we step out of the forest, where we already see the mountain hut Koča na Kriški gori ahead of us, to which only a few dozen steps of easy walking remain.

Discussion about the trip Gozd - Koča na Kriški gori (easier path)

The upper part of the path is quite unpleasant, gravelly, although wide "like a highway". I recommend avoiding it by turning onto a path that branches off to the left into the forest just before the last sharp left bend. The little path is well-trodden, quite steep, you have to watch out for numerous roots, but it is much more pleasant than the marked one.

Really like a highway. Full of racers who sign in. Every time we go, there's another bench. Who are these important people after whom they are named?
| Gost22. 11. 2006 |
No, no, what do I know! Whoever doesn't like highways and benches should head to Kriška from Tržič! And they'll be even more out of breath!
| kolesar22. 11. 2006 |
Kriška is still pretty good as far as highways go, but how it flies to Kališe, there it's really off the hook.
| Gost26. 11. 2006 |
Now they're already dictating which path we should take?????
| Kriška27. 11. 2006 |
As I recently learned from locals, the benches are named after individual particularly deserving members of the Planinsko društvo Križe. Kovač Pajo apparently once, when there was no serial production yet, equipped the entire Tržič area with handmade crampons.
| Gost27. 11. 2006 |
We're not dictating, us locals are just advising!!! That's all about gratitude!

The benches along the path are really friendly. But in various places I've seen benches signed "Janez's bench". For example, along the road to the old Ljubelj and along the path from Dom pod Storžičem to planina V. Poljana. Which Janez is so kind that he provided these pleasant resting places?
| Gost29. 11. 2006 |
Well, you can also reach the bench by asking UO PD krize, and they'll tell you how much you'll contribute and where the bench can be, and the matter will definitely be carried out.
| Gost29. 11. 2006 |
Locals, do you have space for some bench along the path. You can still defile nature a bit more, with really tasteless, kitschy signs (submarine?????)
| Gost29. 11. 2006 |
Well, so that this silly debate ends once and for all: Whoever doesn't like benches with signs should NEVER go to Kriška!!!

You can see that the locals are praising themselves. Disaster, what kind of hikers we have.

Now you're really getting "picky" with these "four-eyes". Those who don't like it on Kriška, go somewhere else, there will be. Some of us will continue "flying up" - and there are more of us every year! In 2006, 149 Kriška enthusiasts successfully completed the "Trimčkarji" action. And we're having a blast... - especially when there are no heavy grumblers up there. Stay where you belong, leave Kriška to those who like going there!

if we're talking about something that's really fantastic on Kriška gora it's UNION! and nice kelnarce
| Gost10. 01. 2007 |
Yes, but the nice kelnarce have nicely raised the price of tea: from 200 sit to 1 euro (also 240 sit). Really praiseworthy.

| Gost10. 01. 2007 |
Best to go under the tap and open the fresh water (so you don't scald your tongue) and drink that - cheaper is only cold water, preferably bypassing the meter! The tea you drink on Kriška and find too expensive you surely never picked (unlike dedicated kriškarji who generously cheapen it every year), so you don't know how much time and diligent hands are needed for you and your like to whine and complain. Otherwise we've already collected some sponsor checks many times, and we'll do it for you if needed, so poor you won't be thirsty at the top of Kriška (we always somehow help such ones up there). And if you grab the keeper by the sleeve "sweetie" and cry on her shoulder (without tears, just a bit hypocritically) (I guarantee she won't pull it away) she'll gladly treat you to a tea..., and bring it to your table so you don't have to lift your ass! For the next tea just try to save up! If not, sit at that table under the calendars and no "problem", someone will treat you to that drink so you'll roll sated and quenched into the valley. Then down among the "easy-chair" and "compote" folks continue whining and saving, saving,...-someday you'll have...-a whole bunch of grumpy and whiny character.

They don't say for nothing that even the wind from Tržič is no good. It holds true, if I read this forum I see how impatient, cynical, offensive, uncultured the locals are, who in the end count themselves as I don't know what kind of mountaineers. With these posts they themselves show their character and culture. They themselves urge us not to go to Krislo and they are right. Good mountaineers have nothing to seek there. Let them praise and glorify themselves. It's a pity the hut was built with self-contributions, we all should enjoy it, not just the self-proclaimed and full of self-praise and arrogance "mountaineers and racers". Plenty of beautiful paths, but every day to Kriška...????
| Gost11. 01. 2007 |
I can't believe where this discussion has developed, from innocent remarks about benches to insulting and offending everywhere. I suggest that real mountaineers, who go to the mountains for the mountains themselves and not for such or other goodies, boycott this discussion, the rest of the impatient and whiners can continue spitting on Kriška and Tržič people! And one more thing, I'm from Tržič and I'm proud of it!!!
| Gost11. 01. 2007 |
I really don't know why good mountaineers have nothing to seek on Kriška. I count myself among quite good mountaineers (so no one misunderstands ) and I have no prejudices against Kriška and similar hills, especially in winter time. Regarding impatience, I also don't know who started with the insults. I think not the so-called locals (I don't belong to them!). Regarding prices, I think in LJ you're happy if you get tea, if you can even call it that, under 1 euro. But it's like this, if something bothers you, you don't go to a certain mountain, if it's too expensive you drink nothing and so on.

| Gost12. 01. 2007 |
Dear guest-mountaineer from (I assume) Ljubljana! I'm really glad that even "non-locals of Kriška mountain" like you look at things realistically, and in the non-egoistic mountaineering spirit. For the praising words you dedicated to Kriška and us, loyal Kriškarji, you deserve a very nice invitation to join us again soon on "our mountain". Together we will drink real mountaineering tea (even at 1 euro each) and exchange nice mountaineering impressions from our mountains! Welcome - even among the "trimčkarji" - Welcome among the Heroes of Kriška mountain!

Benches are very welcome, they lack nothing. But it's also necessary to choose the right time to head to Kriška - on Sunday afternoon around four o'clock there's no trace of any "racers".

Last weekend I also visited Kriška gora. The nice benches were just right for short breaks. The path wasn't too difficult, but still required some effort. At the top I happily warmed up with tasty tea and enjoyed the beautiful view. Nice to escape from gray Ljubljana

Brane V., went up the usual ridge, on the unmarked one also called gozdna dol. It is much more pleasant, suitable for nice weather, but use at your own risk and in winter practically prohibited due to avalanches. The path to Kriška is suitable for any time of day.

| Gost14. 09. 2007 |
No, no, not everyone is rushing - I drag on for almost half an hour longer than stated for the path . Otherwise there are really too many (unofficial) little paths and in places on the slope damage to nature is already occurring because of it. It would be nice if visitors stuck better to the marked paths.

That they race up and down doesn't bother me, but that they can't go on the path is not right nor nice. It would be very nice if they stuck to the path.

I also climbed to Kriška today. It is true, a huge number of people go up there for the stamp in the book, so they don't even have time to greet back, oh oh. Otherwise super, only at the end it's quite frozen. best regards

Well, today I saw Kriška from above for the first time in my life too. The path is steep for my taste, for fast pace even too steep. Thank God we were with children, so no need to go fast. Anyway, I never rush in the mountains and care little about time achievements. I will go to Kriška again sometime, perhaps via the above-mentioned Ovčja (forest, whatever) path that we tested on descent, as it is not too strenuous, but in case of snow it would be really very dangerous due to avalanche.

| Gost17. 02. 2008 |
Tolsti vrh ->Kriška-> Gozd The path is quite long as it takes almost 1h to start ascending. Then you continue up the meadow, again through the forest and reach the ridge from which Storžič is nicely visible, and if you look down you see Velika Poljana. Then another 15 minutes to the top. The path from the top to Kriška again takes almost 1h. Total 3.5-4h. At this moment the path is somewhat icy but doable without crampons, sunny parts are completely snow-free (except right below the top). On the normal one from Kriška you ABSOLUTELY need crampons or snowshoes, because it's ice. Regards

| Gost17. 02. 2008 |
"that steep" = quite steep since you start between 800 and 900m and finish at 1471m which means almost 700m elevation in 1h. (nice view when you come out of Gozd) "ovčja" = the path starts in front of the hut (or somewhere else we start) and continues to the left while the normal one goes straight... Personally a bit tedious for me, especially if the sun comes out it's quite "hot" so you sweat a lot, this winter quite "rotten". In between you can join the steep one and vice versa.

| Gost17. 02. 2008 |
I strongly doubt that those who sign the book, who are practically very often up there, don't greet back. Go to Šmarna gora, there are the real "friendly" ones who don't even hear when you greet them. Interestingly, on Kriška I haven't met one who wouldn't say hello or hi....

| košutnik20. 02. 2008 |
The standard path from the village Gozd is quite steep and doesn't allow much rest. But where does it say that you have to race against time. Before the path from the beech forest leads to increasingly overgrown hayfields, you can even catch your breath for a few minutes on a relatively flat path, then the ascent starts again. At the top, however, a magnificent view and a friendly hut with top-notch spoon food and the desserts are also very tasty. This mountain fascinates me again and again and I will return to it again and again!

Kriška is THE LAW. Just right for a nice day trip in all seasons, which you can extend to Tosti vrh if in good shape. With the view you embrace the homeland, smile at the sun and drink homemade "herbal tea" at Tonka's. We are not frequent guests, but we like to return and we enjoy it. We respect the effort of the path and hut keepers. May Kriška be a special experience for all descendants too. nadka

Our family also set off today on the path described above. I think the path is suitable for children, possibly except the youngest. I would like to praise the hut keeper, as she rewarded us with chocolates for the firewood we brought for winter. An example for the children and great pleasure. You get the SPP stamp at the hut. ON SUNDAY WE WOULD GO TO KRIŠKA GORA. WOULD WE NEED CRAMPONS?
| viharnik13. 02. 2010 |
Presumably crampons are not needed in deep snow, but they sometimes come in handy on steep, powder-covered terrains like the current conditions. If it's not bonded to the base below and you break through to possibly old icy base, crampons and ice axe are mandatory!, because in a slip we fly down right through the fluffy snow which provides no hold. Before ascending, inquire additionally about path conditions with the hut keeper at Koča na Kriški gori.

| serajko13. 02. 2010 |
Yes Although a bit late. On all paths to huts that are manned in winter in the Karavanke, small crampons are usually needed. All paths are usually trampled the next day after snowfall. With large crowds they become smooth. So have them at least in your backpack without hesitation for your safety.

Today at 10am we set off (a bit uncertain due to the weather) to Kriška gora. We were delighted by all 4 benches (Ivanina, Dohtarjeva, Pajotova and Štefanova). In the last 30 min before the summit we surprisingly encountered snow and quite icy path. Otherwise all equipped with poles and spikes we struggled especially on the way down, as it was quite slippery. For the 9-year-old child we bought hiking crampons at the hut and we don't regret it. At the hut it was extremely nice, warm stove, friendly people and delicious food. On departure from the hut we were also pleased by the view towards Gorenjska, as the fog cleared and individual sun rays brought a smile to our faces. Great day.

"Guest 16.9.2007 That they race up and down doesn't bother me, but that they can't stick to the path is not right at all. It would be nice if they stuck to the path." I agree, this gentle path from Gozd to Kriška gora is literally fouled in the middle section with numerous shortcuts left and right of the path. What a shame for this beautiful path, a few years ago it wasn't like that on this trail! We'll see what erosion makes of the shortcuts. Shame! For those who want less visited paths to Kriška gora and crowds bother you. Much less visited and marked is the path from Tržič along the ridge. It is quite longer though. From the north there is also a very nice and fairly marked path from Grahovše past the hunting bivouac. There is also a quite wild hunting path from Loma. That one is only for the experienced.

One more thing, this year you obviously have to watch out for electric fences. At least last week they had (sheep path) quite a strong current connected. Not only does it shock really hard, it sends a solid current up your spine and cramps the muscle. Tested. Too bad...

Hello fellow hikers! Today I first conquered Kriška gora. When we started in front of the church in Gozd, I was all grumpy – ugh, another peak I don't even know. Ah, whatever. Something new again, which can only be positive. And indeed, we ascended the easier path, which is quite wide and steep at the start. We followed the markers and have no regrets. At first it seemed we would meet tons of people, but then, to our surprise, hardly anyone. Maybe 5 people In short, as the predecessors already wrote, the path is very nice and interesting, which the signs certainly add to, spicing up the happenings on the path. I'm completely enthusiastic about them and wouldn't change anything. The last 15 minutes the path becomes quite a bit steeper, the steps add to it, there seems to be no end to them Then finally the hut, which is exceptionally beautiful... at least to me. As for the offer and service in the hut, I have no complaints. Tea EXCELLENT, haven't drunk such a good one in a long time. As for the food, I think it's quite excellent, as they almost ran out of everything except barley soup and cheese struklji. In short, I'll definitely return to Kriška gora, as it was very nice. The only thing I missed was really nice sunny weather, as we had no concrete view of the Julian Alps and the surrounding hills. Nice mountain greeting....Katy

Kriška gora is really sometimes a "cross" and crampons are very useful. But not always in winter, mostly you can manage without, so no panic now. It depends on the conditions, which are not always the same. Good luck and have a nice day on Kriška gora!

Was training on Kriška today. Up this steep path - no snow here at all - except right before the hut. Path from Gozd is dry up to the start of that via ferrata cable before the hut. Snow is soft and breaks through - crampons of course not needed. Further towards Tolsti vrh snow up to the knees and breaks through.

Was up there with daughter at the beginning of the week. I carried a whole log up so it won't be cold in winter. As a curiosity, three little donkeys greeted us - interesting. Didn't see sheep though. It's extremely dry. Down via a more pleasant unmarked path, which however is not suitable in winter due to avalanches.

the path is not exactly level.. one part of the path is harder to access due to fallen trees..

The path is definitely not level and ranks among the more demanding ones...

It's level compared to the steep one .. demanding for the level of a 7-year-old child

This path, if we look at both variants from Gozd, IS level. There is also a Steep path. And given that there are no fixed cables or pitons on the path (as they are not needed), the path ranks among the easy ones. The word "easy" does not indicate steepness. Of course, it is possible that due to obstacles (fallen trees, etc.) it is not passable without difficulty, but this will not change the path classification until the terrain is cleared. LP

Actually, just below the summit along the wide "highway" there is a fixed cable, more like a symbolic railing, which comes in handy sometimes in winter when the path is icy, so you slip on your backside a little less often. Of course, it's not there because of the path's difficulty. For those who find this path demanding, it's better to just stroll in shopping malls.

Kriška, you are absolutely right. The cable came in very handy once in winter before I got micro crampons

I agree with both Kriška and claire. The path is by no means level, but it is easy. The problem is that the administrators are misleading hikers with "level path"! I've been to Kriška 200+ times, and I've never heard any local talk about a level path. Everyone says they came via the "normal path". There are 3 main paths to Kriška - Strma, Ovčja and Normalna. It would be wise for the administrators to change it from level path to normal path.

Hi, the hut is open on weekdays even outside the summer season, like yesterday (1 October).

Today at the top excellent weather, plenty of people too, so no problems with the trail, it's of course snowy and icy in some sections, so crampons are recommended.

Hello
Here, I'm attaching a recording of the entire path to Tolsti vrh past Koča na Kriški gori, so that those deciding for such an endeavor can decide more easily and assess their fitness.
Safe steps!
