Gozdec - Pod Kaninom (Alta Via Resiana)

Access to starting point:
We drive to the center of Bovec, where from the intersection at the main square we continue along the ascending road that, passing the post office, begins to climb toward the nearby church. We bypass the mentioned church on the left side, then arrive in Kaninska vas. Bovec then ends, and the road leads us westward for some time longer. At a small junction, we leave the main asphalt road leading to the village of Plužna and continue driving along the slightly right road (signs for Gozdec road after the intersection). Behind the nearby homestead, the road forks again, and this time we choose the slightly left road (slightly right to Zavrzelno and the trailhead for Rombon). We then ascend along the gravel road, which higher up takes us to the B station of the Kanin cable car. At the B station, the road turns sharply left, then after approximately 1 km of further driving in a traverse ascent brings us to the next intersection. From this intersection, we continue left or straight ahead (sharply right to planina Krnica), following the road from the intersection only for a short while. Soon we notice signs for Kanin along the road, and we park about 20 meters further on, at a small parking lot beside the road.
From Trg Golobarskih žrtev to the starting point it is approximately 9 km.

Path description:
From the starting point, we return a few steps back, then head onto the marked trail in the direction of Visoki Kanin and Vrh Laške planje. The trail immediately begins a steep ascent, mostly leading through dense forest, with only occasional views of the surroundings. During the ascent, the trail takes us under the cliffs of Turn v Skednju (1555 m). When the cliffs end, we reach an unmarked junction, where we continue slightly right on the marked trail (slightly left an unmarked trail leading to Veliki Babanski Skedenj 2121 m); this soon steeply climbs over a short steep slope, where there is a greater risk of slipping especially when wet. The steepness soon eases, and we arrive at the abandoned Planina Gozdec, which we bypass on the right side.
Further on, we ascend through increasingly sparse forest, allowing some views from the trail toward the Bovec basin and Krnsko pogorje. A fairly even ascent follows, and while looking at the walls of Veliki Skedenj, we reach a small spring located to the right of the trail. Further along, the easy-to-follow trail is covered with grass that can be quite wet after rain, in the morning, and in the forenoon. After a while, the trail turns more toward the west and gradually becomes less steep. A few more minutes of scenic ascent follow, and we reach the ruins of the old Peter Skalar hut, which burned down in 1972.
We bypass the hut on the left side, then ascend gently to moderately for some time over more grassy terrain. The trail then turns more southward, with some steeper ascent following; the trail slowly turns right, so further on we mostly walk westward. A few minutes of easy walking follow, and we arrive at a marked junction, where we continue left following the Kanin signs; to the right, the trail leads toward Dom Petra Skalarja na Kaninu.
The trail then takes us, with some short descents and ascents, back to another junction. To the right, another trail branches toward Dom Petra Skalarja; straight or slightly right, the trail goes through the Zadnji dol valley to Visoki Kanin; we head left toward Vrh Laške Planje.
From the junction, we first ascend mostly over grassy terrain where the trail is very poorly visible. The trail soon turns right and for some time proceeds northwest, almost parallel to the trail to Visoki Kanin. Later, it turns slightly left, and the terrain becomes more rocky. Further on, we walk for quite some time across the Kanin podi, where the trail is mostly invisible, so we must pay close attention to the marks and cairns. At some spots, the trail ascends more steeply, requiring use of hands. Later, the trail turns slightly right, leading to more scree terrain, along which we ascend steeply. Along this trail, we reach a small notch on the left side of the summit Turn pod Laško Planjo.
Here, we continue left and begin a very steep ascent along a partially grassy ridge. Considerable caution is required here, as the ascent is very steep and slippery. We continue along the ridge, which becomes somewhat less steep and rockier further on. We follow the ridge all the way to Vrh Laške Planje, located on the border between Italy and Slovenia.
At the summit, where we join the Visoka Rezijanska pot, we continue right along the border ridge. Initially, we descend slightly along a fairly wide and undemanding ridge marked with red triangles. Our trail soon descends a bit more, then ascends over rocks to the ridge, along which we reach the lesser-known summit Mali Dol. From the summit, we descend to the nearby notch, from which a not overly steep gully leads toward the Kanin podi. From the notch, we continue straight and ascend the ridge, soon reaching the summit of Črni Vogel.
From Črni Vogel, we begin descending a steep slope with some scree. Further on, the trail becomes more demanding, running along and over an occasionally very narrow ridge. Along this trail, we reach the notch Čez Dol, the lowest point in the ridge between Vrh Laške Planje and Visoki Kanin. From the notch, we continue along the still narrow ridge, after which the trail becomes slightly less demanding. A few short more challenging sections follow, then we reach grassier terrain, ascending toward the less prominent summit Pod Kaninom, where there is also a somewhat poorly visible junction where a partially abandoned trail from the village Korito / Coritis joins from the left.
