Access to starting point:
A) We drive to Črna na Koroškem, then follow the signs for Koprivna and Podpece. For some time we drive along the Meža River, then at the crossroads we turn right towards Podpece, Dom na Peci and Koča na Pikovem. In Podpece the asphalt ends, and we follow the signs for Dom na Peci. Higher, at the saddle Vrh šteng, the road from Mežica also joins from the right, we continue to follow the signs for Dom na Peci, and in some places we also notice "avtocesta" signs. We continue driving on a macadam road; at the last crossroads we follow the signs for the parking lot. We follow the mentioned road to its end, where we park at the Jakobe parking lot.
B) We drive to Luče (to here from Mozirje or from Kamnik over the pass Volovljek (Kranjski Rak)), then continue driving towards Logarska dolina. In the village Solčava we leave the main road towards Logarska dolina and continue driving right towards Podolševa, the pass Spodnje Sleme and Črna na Koroškem. Further on the road loses its asphalt surface, and after a few kilometers at the crossroads in Podolševa we turn right towards Črna na Koroškem. The road, which further on mainly ascends transversely, brings us after some time to the pass Spodnje Sleme. From the pass the road starts to descend, and we follow it towards Črna na Koroškem. When after a few kilometers we descend into the valley, at the crossroads we turn right towards Črna na Koroškem (left Koprivna). We descend on the main road towards Črna na Koroškem; the road first takes us past the turn-off into the Tople valley, a little lower also to the turn-off of the road towards Podpece, Koča na Pikovem and Dom na Peci. We continue on the mentioned road, which quickly brings us to Podpece.
C) We drive to Mežica, where we follow the signs for Peca. Further, we drive towards the border crossing Mežica, still before the border crossing we turn left onto the road towards Peca. Higher, at the saddle Vrh šteng, the road from Podpece also joins from the left, and we follow the signs for Dom na Peci, in some places also noticing "avtocesta" signs. We continue driving on a macadam road; at the last crossroads we follow the signs for the parking lot. We follow the mentioned road to its end, where we park at the Jakobe parking lot.
Route description:
From the parking lot we continue following the signs for Dom na Peci and proceed on the cart track right uphill. After a short ascent we reach a junction, where we continue right and continue ascending on the cart track. The cart track then gradually becomes less steep and we soon leave it. The blazes direct us left onto a footpath, on which we then ascend through the forest for some time. The path through the forest then brings us back to a narrower cart track, where we continue right and reach Dom na Peci in about 5 minutes of further walking.
From Dom na Peci we head onto the footpath towards Mala Peca or the path towards Kordeževa glava. After less than ten minutes of ascent the two paths join, and we continue on the marked path, which ascends further uphill across the meadow and brings us to a marked junction.
We take the right path in the direction of the demanding path (which it is not); left leads the very demanding path to Peca. The right path is easy and has no difficult sections! Our easier right path then soon passes a bench and brings us among the dwarf pines, through which we ascend. The ascent continues on a moderately steep slope with ever better views. After some time the path brings us to a grassy plateau, where the climbing path joins from the left. Only the final ascent to the summit of Kordeževa glava remains, whose summit we reach after a few minutes of further walking on an easy slope.

Yesterday I was on Peca for the first time and I'm thrilled with the trip! Nice path, nice views, friendly locals ...

What about the road to the starting point of this trail?
|
|
|
|
| Kriška17. 08. 2010 |
Gravel forest road of course, long (several kilometers), very narrow, mostly with depressions (shallow ditches) on both sides, so in my opinion meeting two passenger cars would be very difficult, mostly impossible. It's not particularly steep, about a month ago it wasn't particularly "torn up" (actually among the less bad ones). At one spot, about 10 m long (near some quarry), you need to be careful with a low car so it doesn't bottom out, but nothing special. Parking lot quite large.

I just returned from the trip - I do not recommend the macadam "highways" from Podpeče at all, as it is especially completely crumbled on the section from the intersection at Terčevem, elsewhere recent heavy rain has also damaged it considerably; definitely recommend coming from Mežica!

Is the road to the Jakobe parking lot already a bit better? Or worse from the recent floods? I'd like to go to Peca on Saturday, but I don't know????

Does anyone perhaps know what the road to the Jakobe parking lot is like and whether the Dom na Peci is open this week?

Stanko1, yesterday I waited for someone to reply to you. Since no one responded, my wife and I went today to check the conditions ourselves .Here is the answer: The road to Jakobe parking lot is not passable for passenger cars. There is quite a lot of snow. We left the car by the road below a bit above Stopar then on foot along the marked and trodden path further. Some pushed with cars further but it's better on foot. The hut is closed. Apparently it will be possible to celebrate New Year's Eve there (that's what it says at the hut). The weather was wonderful. We didn't hurry much. For the path from the car to the hut we took 1h 35min, from the hut to Kordeževa glava 1h 15min. The path is trodden and not difficult if you're used to walking in snow. There weren't many visitors, including us we counted 19. In such nice weather it's worth going on such a trip. Best regards! Dani

Hello, with colleagues we would like to go to Peca this Saturday. Does anyone have any information on what the conditions are like and which path is the easiest for winter ascent? Where is the best place to leave the car? Thanks for the reply!

| joža x13. 01. 2011 |
Last winter I went to Peca via the following path Topla(Fajmut)-Knipsovo sedlo-Peca, there was 0.3m to 0.5m of snow and no problems. It was also possible to drive to the starting point without issues.

I also plan to go up on Saturday, from Podpeče, I checked regarding conditions, it is possible to reach the former guard post with a car, if of course the road is not icy. lp

Quite icy however was (1.1.) also the path itself through the forest further to the hut, so the descent from the hut is quite difficult without crampons. LP!

How is it with this path? Are there markers in some visible places? How do you figure out where the path is if everything is under snow? lp

No worries, the path is trodden, can't miss it. We started from the guardhouse, it was possible to drive quite well, some went even higher with cars. LP!

I'm wondering if this path goes past King Matjaž's cave since I haven't been there yet and I'm curious. Thanks for the description!

|
|
| Mr.Dani10. 03. 2011 |
Mitja89, this path does not go past King Matjaž's cave. You can detour to the cave from the hut under Peca (photo 17). At the hut, turn left (where the benches are) and into the forest. There's a signpost. From there to the cave is about 15 minutes. LP Dani

Attaching a couple of photos from May 1st, now there's probably even less snow. From Topla towards Knipsovo sedlo and the top of Peč there were more patches of snow, likewise then towards home, the secured section was snow-free. Best regards

20.10.2012 Beautiful sunny day. Warm, hot without wind. Disappointment at the hut, because we wanted to overnight and the warden said he was going to the valley. We couldn't believe that in such nice weather the warden could afford to close the hut overnight, even though the mountaineering association website says the hut is open. So the warden disappointed us.

The classic path to Peca starts in Mežica. But if you drive higher, it's good to have at least a bit of a bad conscience
|
|
|
|
| wanyola16. 09. 2013 |
No, no, why should anyone who goes to the mountains have a bad conscience? Everyone hikes according to their abilities! If someone has to drive two hours from somewhere, the question is whether they then have enough time to complete the hike completely from the valley. Of course, those who live in Mežica can more easily do such a tour and go on foot from home, and even that is quite a mouthful for one day!

Does anyone know what condition the road to the starting point of this path is in, I would go on Saturday/Sunday if the weather is good?
|
|
|
|
| Domch2. 01. 2014 |
You won't make it to the end of the road, but to Karavla or Mitnek. Today there was strong wind on Peca, the ski resort was closed. The track was made, but now it's probably drifted over in many places. Otherwise, you can read current conditions under Current conditions -Karavanke-Peca.

You go to Jakobe by car, then it's a cart track to the hut.
|
|
|
|
| nordkap5. 09. 2014 |
It's easy, whenever I'm up there I always meet them, last time even a group of yodellers. To Jakobe (parking) it's nice, then through the forest across the meadow to the cart track and along it to the hut. But I prefer walking up on foot.

I'm interested in the approximate length of the accessible or in the starting point description mentioned gravel road, which higher up to the parking has some intersections and the condition of this road. Thanks for the answer. LP

| Bosstjan29. 10. 2014 |
The road to the parking lot is in solid condition (on Monday there were no problems), except the section where the sign (a little after the end of asphalt) says 'avtocesta' - these few 100 meters of road have no possibility of avoiding if two cars meet. Otherwise from the end of asphalt it's another 15 minutes drive..

Today in wonderful weather, we did this path with two almost ten-year-olds. With moderate walking and short breaks, we needed just under two hours. The path is really nice, easy, with exceptional views. On the way back we went via Mala Peč, even to the cave of King Matjaž. The road is drivable, quite exemplary for mountain roads, but I wouldn't drive it with a low car. That avtocesta is really narrow and extremely steep. But from Črna you need to count on at least half an hour more driving.

On 6 May we found prescription glasses on the trail to the top of Peca (Kordeževa glava). We took them to the Peca mountain hut. Towards the summit there is still about 30-40 cm of snow, but the trail is already somewhat trodden. Gaiters mandatory!

The described road from Podpeča to Jakob is terrifying, especially the section shortly after the end of the asphalt, after the motorway sign. Probably the recent rain has done its part, digging deep ditches along the already narrow drivable section of the road. However, this section can be avoided by turning towards Austria in Mežica, then after about 2 km turning left towards Peca. From there it's about 10 km of forest road to Jakob, of which about 8 km is gravel. The road is well marked; follow the signs for Peca or Dom na Peci, and you'll reach the parking lot directly. The section of the path from the parking lot to the Dom na Peci hut is quite time-consuming, mostly following a forest road. It's good because the hut is very close (about 45 min), and this part is suitable even for small children, who will also find the King Matjaž cave interesting. Personally, I prefer the path from Topla to the hut or to Mala Peča; it's less crowded, and the access to the starting point is asphalted.

I have one question: which way is better to drive to the starting point Jakobe, from Črna or Mežica? Thanks for the information.

| Janezs23. 06. 2017 |
Depending on the direction you come from, you arrive in Mežica or Črna, but from Črna there's a bit more asphalt. However, from both places there are nice hiking paths to Peca. Best regards.

What's the condition of the road? Can you get there normally with a personal vehicle?
|
|

Now, when heavy rains are possible, it's probably bad, worst at the "quarry" spot of the ravine where it crosses the stream in case of rain.

|
| Pohodnjak29. 07. 2017 |
I was on Peca via this route on 19.7. and the road to the starting point was OK - normally drivable. The path is nice, easy and offers some beautiful views. Oh... the summit logbook was already completely full that day.

14 days ago I was there. Since they were doing some work on the gravel road, unfortunately I didn't reach this destination. I arrived at the destination where the first sign was, saying 2h to the hut on Peca. The path is nice, a bit steep all through the forest, so there is shade. The path to Peca was also nice. Recommended.

Today I did this trail, snow is only among the low pines towards the top, about 10 m long, the upper part of this patch collapsed on me and I sank my whole leg up to my butt inside, so be careful, because under the snow there is a hole due to melting.

The road to Jakobe was completely fine a few days ago - but it really drags for about 8 km on gravel for about 20 minutes. At the top, however, really beautiful view.

Is the road still drivable without problems? Would this trail be the most suitable for the ascent to Peca in winter (now) or which one is more suitable? Thanks for the answer
|
|
|
|
| guki6. 02. 2020 |
The most suitable is from the center of Mežica, no ice no snow. Then some drive to the guardhouse, you save an hour of uphill walking, then you have the road to Jakobe which is almost to the hut, that's more for Sunday hikers. Also possible from below Peca or Najbrža (King Matjaž castles from years ago). They say the most beautiful is from Topla and it's also circular. Also Koprivne and Luž.

Also from Črna (Mušenik, Pristava), and of course also from the Austrian side, if someone wants a more wintery ascent

Just back home from the top of Peca. Warning - use the access from Mežica - as the road through Podpeca is occasionally completely closed (until the end of July)! The road to the Podpeca (Jakobe) parking lot is in good condition and drivable without any major issues - even the heavy rains didn't mess it up ;-) The trail is excellently marked all the way to the top and also in between (Kralj Matjaž, Mala Peca etc. Excellent family hike (children over 10 years) and extremely suitable for four-legged friends! Congratulations to the managers!!

Hello. Given all this year's weather adversities - does anyone have current information on the condition of the road to the Jakobe parking lot? I'm a bit worried about the car 🫣🤏😬

Half anyway straight from the valley

The road to Jakobe was never really friendly to low-clearance cars, even in the best times. And probably no better today either.

What are the current conditions like on the gravel road and on the trail itself? Thanks 😀

Road closed to Jakob parking; we drove to Črna na Koroškem direction Topla to the parking lot. The path is of course longer to the hut two hours and then half an hour and a half to the top of Peca. But it was worth it

Was yesterday on Peca, drove to Črna and from there to Podpeča, and to Jakobe parking lot, macadam quite ok, drivable

Yesterday I was on the mountain and it was a nice experience, from the parking lot to the hut on Peca there wasn't much snow, but higher up there is still a lot of snow. But overall a nice experience and the views from the top are really stunning.
