Access to starting point:
a) We leave the Varaždin–Zagreb motorway at the exit for Novi Marof and then continue left towards Ljubeščica. After one kilometre of driving we turn right towards the village of Ljubelj and the Ljubeščica quarry, which is already visible from the motorway. We continue past the quarry and some farms along Križevska ulica. The road then turns into a gorge and leads to another quarry, from where it continues towards the villages of Kalnik and Borje. We park at a suitable place at the beginning of the quarry.
b) From the old Varaždin–Zagreb road at Novi Marof we take the exit towards Varaždinske Toplice at the roundabout. Soon we reach an intersection from where access to the motorway is possible. We continue towards Ljubeščica and then follow the description above.
Route description:
From the starting point we continue through the quarry along the unpaved road Ljubelj–Borje. After the quarry we notice a few more places where we can park. When we reach the shrine of Hrušovska Mater Božja, we begin the first gentle ascent.
After the first gentle ascent we see a forest track that leaves the road sharply to the left. Here we turn upwards. At the junction we notice the sign Hruškovec, and a little after the junction the sign Peca and the path number 162.
Our path runs for some time along the forest track, on which we ascend quite steeply through the forest. When we reach a short clearing, the path levels out for a while.
Now we reach a junction where we can easily miss the direction. It seems logical to continue slightly right upwards, but our path goes straight into a gentle descent. We descend for about a minute until we reach the next junction, where we leave the track and ascend steeply through the forest. After a few minutes we reach a new track, where we turn left into a more open, higher forest.
Again we reach a junction of forest tracks and turn right. We ascend gently to moderately. After a few minutes of walking we leave this track slightly to the left. Through the forest we ascend to the next track, and along the way we also cross the bed of a stream.
Now we reach a junction where the path from the village Ljubelj Kalnički joins us. We continue upwards and after a few minutes of walking along the track we reach the summit of Peca, where a beautiful view opens to the east and north.
