Access to starting point:
From Makarska, we drive towards Dubrovnik, but before the end of Makarska, at the traffic-light-controlled intersection behind the Konzum supermarket, we turn left. We ascend the road to the village of Kotišina; for orientation, we can also follow the signs for the Biokovo Botanical Park. We continue through the village towards the botanical park, and at the park entrance, we continue another about 100 m, where we park by the church.
Path description:
From the church in Kotišina, we head west along the road. We pass the entrance to the Biokovo Botanical Park, which also features a renovated kaštel. Just a few dozen meters from the park entrance, a marked trail begins, which climbs from the road into the steep slopes of Biokovo. The trail is well marked and ascends in switchbacks as a narrow mulatjera through the karst terrain, alternating between rocky sections, bushes, and forest. Even in summer, the entire ascent to the edge of the plateau is mostly shaded until 9:30. During the ascent, we reach a few junctions, but we always follow the direction to Vošac. After a good two hours of ascent with views of Makarska, Brač, and Hvar, we reach the edge of the plateau called Pržinovac. The path levels out here and with a gentle ascent in 20 min reaches the scenic saddle Štrbina. From the saddle, we head right, but soon a sign directs us left towards the Toni Roso hut. We reach the hut, located on the summit of Vošac, in 10 minutes from this junction.
On the day of the visit (11. 8. 2023), the hut was closed.
For a partial loop descent, we can descend from the Štrbina saddle towards Makarska, where at around 850 m altitude a path branches off towards Kotišina. The path nicely traverses the slope along the Stup ledge, which is covered with pines and provides shade on the descent. This path joins the ascent path, by which we return to the starting point.
