Ljubelj - Srednja peč (via Vatelca or Skleda)

Access to starting point:
We drive to the border crossing Ljubelj, where before the tunnel we turn left towards Zelenica. Then we drive across a small bridge, and then we park on a large parking lot.

Path description:
At the beginning of the parking lot, signs for Stol, Vrtača and Dom na Zelenici point us to a wide cart track which starts ascending by the torrent. When a little higher the cart track turns left, we continue straight on the mountain path which continues through the forest and soon returns to the cart track. The cart track a little higher turns right and brings us out of the forest onto the ski track of the former ski slope Zelenica. Next follows a short steeper ascent on the ski slope, and then the path flattens and leads us by the foot of the scree below Begunjščica.
From the marked path soon a path which runs on a transport road branches off to the right, and we continue on the "road" to the nearby Koča Vrtača hut.
At the hut the road turns right, and we continue straight in the direction of the mountain path to Zelenica. For a short time we continue below the former one-seater chairlift Zelenica II, and then the path starts ascending steeper on a slope which is partly overgrown by dwarf pines. After a few hairpin turns, we return to the transport road, on which we continue with a view towards Šentanski plaz.
The path ahead leads us on slopes of Spodnji plot (peak, on which they made a sport climbing path years ago), then from the road we turn right onto a footpath which cuts a longer turn. When we return to the road we are already at the upper station of the former one-seater chairlift Zelenica II, and only a few steps of descent separate us from Dom na Zelenici.
After the mountain hut, we continue left and ascend to half of the children's ski lift, and then on the right we notice signs for Vrtača and Stol, which direct us right into a belt of forest. A little further, we cross a connecting lane between the children's ski lift and anchor ski lift, and then we cross another ski track.
We find the continuation of the path at a smaller boulder, and then we cross slopes below the ridge Na Možeh. When the crossing ends, we arrive in an indistinct little valley, where to the right branches off a path to Suho ruševje (by the branch-off there is usually a cairn).
From the junction ahead we ascend briefly through the forest, and then the path brings us to slopes of Vrtača, where in a gentle ascent we cross a few screes, occasionally also a really short belt of forest. Further on, the path from Dom pri izviru Završnice joins us from the left, a little further ahead the path forks.
At the junction the path to Vrtača branches off slightly to the right, straight ahead the upper path to Stol continues. We continue on the right path in the direction of Vrtača, which ascends somewhat more steeply. Higher we arrive on grassy slopes, where the path becomes even steeper, then turns left and transitions to steep slopes. Next follows crossing a slightly exposed gully, then over steep grass we ascend to the southwest shoulder of Vrtača.
Here the marked path which leads to Vrtača turns sharply right, and we continue straight to the other side of the ridge, where we descend along the path to the nearby scree. When we reach the nearby scree we continue on a somewhat less trodden but marked mountain path (the path is marked with red lines). The path, which first gently, then moderately, occasionally steeply descends the scree, almost semicircularly bypasses the nearby cirque. The path, which in several places is also exposed to falling rocks, lower stops descending and brings us to a short but steep grassy slope. After ascending a few meters up the steep slope, we arrive in the plateau-like terrain around the sinkhole Skleda (on some maps also Vatelca). A few minutes of relatively gentle path follow, then we arrive at a small junction, where we continue left downward (right: saddle Belščica, Svačica and Celovška koča). The path ahead first steeply descends the gully, then turns right, where it transitions to expansive scree over which we ascend transversely. Higher we leave the scree and slightly descend to the nearby junction, where we join the upper and lower paths to Stol.
From the mentioned junction we continue sharply left in the direction of Zelenica (slightly right Stol), then after about 10 steps, still before the path starts to descend noticeably, on the right we notice a small cairn and a nice passage over pathless terrain towards the saddle between the massif of Stol and Srednja peč.
We continue along the edge of the dwarf pines, over nicely passable pathless terrain along which individual cairns indicate the right direction. After approximately 5 minutes we arrive at a small saddle west of Srednja peč, where on the left across the scree we notice a poorer track. We ascend to the mentioned track, then cross the scree to the right. When the scree ends, the track leads through a narrow belt of dwarf pines, then the poorer track turns left along the dwarf pines steeply upward and after a few steps ends in relatively steep grass. We continue the ascent steeply upward beside the dwarf pines, and we proceed in approximately the same direction until we reach the ridge, where a poorer track reappears. We continue right, a little further also through a short belt of burnt dwarf pines, then along and on the ridge, which to the left is occasionally also precipitous, we ascend to the little-visited and panoramic summit.
