Access to starting point:
We arrive in Croatia via the Brežice/Bregana border crossing. Along the Bregana-Zagreb motorway, we drive to the Samobor exit. In the town, we follow the signs for Rude and Jastrebarsko. When we see the right turnoff for Smerovišće, we leave the main road and continue to the village of Mali Lipovec (15 minutes) and the Šoićeva hiža restaurant, where we can park (if the parking lot is full, we park further along the road, and it is also recommended to park along the road anyway, as the parking lot is intended for the restaurant's guests).
Path description:
From the parking lot, we return about two hundred meters along the road back towards Samobor, where we notice a small waterfall by the path, but we soon arrive at the spot where we leave the asphalt road (the turnoff is well marked from the Samobor direction, from our side the sign is harder to see, a wooden cross by the road in the immediate vicinity of the turnoff provides additional help).
The path ahead follows a wide cart track that once served as a supply road for the mountain hut at Veliki dol. The track first ascends past a water reservoir, then leads us in a few moderate switchbacks up the western slopes of Oštrc. During the ascent on the occasionally quite muddy path, the trail also passes one stone hut.
After a little more than half an hour of walking, the path brings us to a junction, where we turn sharply right onto the Hoffmann trail (straight to the Veliki dol mountain hut in five minutes, slightly right to the junction with the trail from the village of Rude). From here, the path becomes steep, the surface more demanding - scree. Further on, the forest becomes sparser, and higher up the path even leads across a scenic grassy slope. When we reach the ridge higher up, we join the path running from the village of Rude.
From the junction, we continue into the forest and after two minutes of further walking, we are at the Željezničar hut below Oštrc. Just before the hut, a steep path from the village of Braslovje joins from the left.
At the hut, we can refresh ourselves or even spend the night. At night, there is an exceptional view from the hut to the illuminated Zagreb in the distance.
At the hut, we will notice signs for the summit, but it is still about 10 minutes of ascent on a steep and occasionally very scree-covered path to reach it. Upon reaching the summit, we are still in the forest, so it is worth continuing a bit further to the large cross, from where a limited view opens up.
