Access to starting point:
Drive to Spittal an der Drau and take the exit for Lienz. Follow the regional road via Lendorf, after which drive a few kilometers and then take a right turn in the direction of Möllbrücke, Mühldorf and Obervellach. Soon after Obervellach turn right in the direction of Mallnitz. In Mallnitz pass the railway station (with motorail connection to Böckstein via 8370 m long Tauern tunnel) and then follow the signs for Jamnigalm and Hagenerhütte (at this crossroads there are around 15 green signs), as the road still turns left in the village. The road leads out of the village until it reaches a boom barrier where 4 euros need to be paid in the machine (status for 2018, note: the machine takes only coins). The road leads to the parking space below Jamnig pasture.
Route description:
From the parking lot walk a few dozen meters back along the road, turn right over the bridge and follow the serpentine road to Jamnig pasture in 5 to 10 minutes. The forest ends with the pasture.
At Jamnig pasture continue left. At the beginning the trail crosses grassy slopes and ascends very gently towards the west.
The trail then enters a steeper section, where entire slopes are covered with blueberries (therefore this area is popular among pickers). Occasionally a torrent bed is crossed, where it is good to have a long step (some children may have difficulties here).
The trail becomes steepest in the last third, where it ascends the slopes towards the bivouac. The trail then joins the Hagenerweg trail leading to Hagener Hütte. Here continue left and after five minutes you reach Dr. Rudolf Weißgerber Biwak.
At the bivouac there is a nice view to the west towards the lakes and to the east towards the valley and Mallnitz.
It is possible to continue the ascent to Feldseekopf, 2864 m south (40 min); to Vorderer Geißlkopf north (1h 10 min); to Hagener hut (Hagener Hütte) northeast (1h 30 min) or to Duisburger hut (Duisburger Hütte) west (3h).
