From Kranjska Gora via the border crossing at Rateče we drive to Trbiž / Tarvisio. Then we drive along the old road towards Videm / Udine. Already after a few kilometers from Trbiž / Tarvisio, the road to Ovčja vas / Valbruna branches off to the left. Here we turn left and follow the road all the way to the mountain pasture Zajzera, where we park on a large parking lot.
Path description:
From the parking lot from where there is a very nice view towards the northern wall of Montaž we head to path 611 on the right side of the chapel. We follow the signs for the mountain hut Rifugio Grego and already at the beginning we start relatively steeply ascending through the forest, later we also cross a few times the macadam road which also leads towards the mountain hut Rifugio Grego. The path then turns slightly to the right and brings us to a forested ridge from which some views also open up on the northern side. For a better view, it is necessary to step onto some of the panoramic points on the edge of the ridge, whereby some caution is needed as the ridge is precipitous on the northern side.
Further on, we continue ascending through the forest and occasionally beautiful views open up towards Montaž and Viš. We follow such a path all the way to the mountain hut Rifugio Grego where there is a wonderful view mainly towards Montaž.
The macadam road at the hut turns right and leads towards the nearby pass Rudni vrh (Sella di Sompdogna), while we walk along the footpath to the signposts for the hut. Straight ahead leads path 651 towards the lake Laghetto di Somdogna and further towards Krniška glavica (Jof di Sompdogna), while at the junction we turn left onto path 611 towards bivouac Stuparich.
The path quickly brings us into the forest and soon descends somewhat more steeply. Further on, the path then mostly crosses the slopes towards the south, occasionally some views also open up towards Višarje and Kamniti lovec. Later the path turns somewhat to the right and continues crossing the slopes, occasionally also descending a little. Here we also cross a few torrents and gullies, and from the path increasingly beautiful views also start opening up towards Viš and Montaž. From the forest we then pass into dwarf pines and a slight descent follows into the valley to the usually dry bed of the torrent Scolo Carnizza where we join the direct path from the mountain pasture Zajzera. Here there is also a marked junction.
Further along the valley runs a somewhat less trodden path towards Krniška glavica and saddle Foran de la Grave, while we follow the signs for bivouac Stuparich and first cross the torrent bed. The path then starts to ascend and turns to the left. The relatively steep path then mostly runs through sparse larch forest, and higher along the path there is also some dwarf pine and shrubbery. Such a path then brings us to a marked junction.
To the right leads the path towards the valley of Dunje (Val Dogna) and Krniška glavica, while we continue to the left. From the junction follows the crossing of slopes towards the east and the path soon brings us to bivouac Stuparich.
